Plastics event for the Ukraine

Novel processing technologies, equipment used in the plastics processing sector, packaging systems and design, a wide range of plastics, recycling. These are only few of all attractions available at the International Fair of Plastics Processing PLASTUKRAINA, which will be held in Kiev on 23rd September. The fair is a Ukrainian edition of the largest exhibition dedicated to plastics processing industry in Poland and in Eastern Europe- PLASTPOL.

OBI expands in CEE

OBI will aggressively push its international expansion focussing efforts on Russia, Poland, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary and the Balkans. On top of these ambitious expansion targets OBI is about to enter three additional countries, namely Ukraine, Romania and Slovakia. Medium term targeting up to 20 stores both in Ukraine and Romania, OBI plans to open another 10-15 stores in Slovakia within short. First openings in these countries are scheduled for 2008.

Rail strike fails to stop Brau Beviale

A rail strike and snow storms marked the start of BRAU Beviale 2007 in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg (14-16 November), but this did not deter the 34,456* trade visitors (2006: 36,260*) at this year’s most important capital goods exhibition for the beverage industry. The share of international visitors rose in both percentage and absolute terms. 28 % came mainly from Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Russia, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, France, Great Britain, Italy and other growth markets in Central Eastern and Eastern Europe to source information about beverage raw materials, technologies, logistics and marketing from the 1,416* exhibitors (2006: 1,437*) – almost 40 % of them international.

A World Bank report has found that the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union are experiencing a third transition, a transition that overlaps with their recent political and economic transitions. In 2025, more than one in five Bulgarians will be more than 65 years old—up from just 13 percent in 1990. Ukraine’s population will shrink by a fifth between the years 2000 and 2025. And the average Slovene will be 47.4 years old in 2025—among the oldest in the world.

Pharmatech starts today

Retal installs new equipment

With the recent addition of two HyPET 300 systems, Retal Industries, a major packaging and component supplier in Russia and Eastern Europe, has extended its reliance on Husky Injection Molding Systems. From the initial machine supplied to their plant in the Czech Republic in 1994, followed in 1999 by the first machine supplied to Russia, Retal Industries has installed a total of 69 Husky systems to date. The company designated Husky as the main supplier for their PET preform systems more than five years ago.

Pannonplast expand to Serbia

Bloomberg reports that Pannonplast Nyrt, a Hungarian exporter of plastic yoghurt cups, will spend Ft 355 million ($1.6 million) setting up a consumer packaging unit in Serbia to add a third foreign market to its operations. Pannonplast, based in Budapest, expects production to start in the Q1 of 2007, it said in a stock exchange statement. By having a company in Serbia, Pannonplast will be exempt from a 20% customs levy it currently must pay. The company, which also operates in Romania and Ukraine, has been selling property and unprofitable units to stem losses and concentrate on consumer packaging. It will spend a total of € 10 million ($12.8 million) on building the plant in Serbia this year and buying another in Bulgaria in the H1 of next year CFO Dénes Gyimóthy said Aug. 1. Pannonplast expects its Serbian unit to contribute Ft 400 million to revenue in its first year of operation, which will probably triple in three years, the company said.
