Refillable packaging - is it worth it?
Packaging poses a real environmental problem in terms of waste, and costs consumers money. The Environment Agency estimates that more than 88,000 tons of weekly household waste is packaging. Packaging volume increased by 12 per cent between 1999 and 2005, according to the environment minister Ben Bradshaw, and it now makes up about a third of the typical household’s waste. Buying products in refillable packaging cuts down on waste and saves energy that would be used to produce new packaging.
