Security printing goes for digital plate processing

Since film manufacturers announced that special films for security plate making will no longer be available, the security printers are forced to search for alternative technologies to image their letterpress plates. An efficient option is the mask ablation of digital plates. The technology is already established in the flexo and letterpress market for many years. The digital plates are masked with a black layer which is imaged by a diode, YAG or fibre-laser at a resolution of up to 10,000 dpi. This technology not only eliminates the film processing and the disadvantages of the image transfer via film, it also offers significant quality improvements for the security printers.

Printer notes upturn in market

Since April German press manufacturer Koenig & Bauer (KBA) has seen a major upturn in new orders for sheetfed presses, with business drummed up at trade fairs in the Middle and Far East largely balancing a shortfall in the first quarter. This was the message delivered by Helge Hansen, KBA president and CEO since 27 March, at the company’s 84th AGM at the Vogel Convention Center in Würzburg. However, as Hansen warned the serried ranks of shareholders present, demand for big newspaper and commercial web presses remains unsatisfactory. “While we have increased our share of the global newspaper market to almost 50 per cent, the total volume of new orders booked in the first five months was well below our target for the year. The global recession and financial meltdown continue to impact on demand in the sector, and are now affecting sales of special presses for niche applications. Small waterless printing systems in Poland

At a joint stand of KBA-Polska (Poland) and KBA-Grafitec s.r.o. (Czech Republic), KBA-Metronic (Germany) demonstrated its presence at the well visited printing exhibition in Poland. At its stand, the printing industry specialist was able to talk to expert printers about the benefits of small, waterless printing systems. With the aid of numerous examples of applications and print patterns, interested visitors found out how interesting niche products such as lenticular and 3D-images could be printed on special plastic films or on adhesion or magnetic foils with the Genius 52UV sheet-fed press. Plastic materials such as PVC, PET, ABS, PS and PC etc., as well as special papers and cartons with predominantly non-absorbing surfaces are exactly what the Genius 52UV was built for. Up to a format of 36 x 52 cm and a maximum printing material thickness of 0.8 mm it can therefore print on materials that rarely stand a chance with conventional offset printing. That is exactly the reason why it is already a permanent fixture with so many users worldwide. With the Genius 52UV, printing companies can set themselves apart from their competitors and move into niches previously reserved for screen printing or expensive digital printing systems.

Financial crisis biting German manufacturer

The financial crisis is impacting severely on Germany’s export-driven engineering industry, and Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) is no exception. As the third-quarter figures issued on 14 November revealed, tumbling demand in key export markets caused the volume of new orders for sheetfed presses to fall 15.8% below the equivalent figure for 2007, while orders for web and special presses were 9.1% down on a weak prior year. The volume of orders on hand shrank by €160m to €721.6m, and this has caused major fluctuations in plant utilisation since the beginning of October. As a countermeasure, overtime and holiday accounts are being run down at KBA’s web press production plants, and the Christmas closure extended. As was also announced on 14 November, KBA’s sheetfed facility, which officially introduced short-time work at the beginning of November, is having to trim its payroll by 400.

KBA gets orders worth over EUR200m at drupa

At the 83rd AGM of German press manufacturer Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA), group president and CEO Albrecht Bolza-Schünemann revealed that Drupa, a 14-day print media trade fair recently held in Düsseldorf, had brought in orders worth more than €200m, surpassing the figure for the previous Drupa in 2004. Most of the contracts were for batch-produced sheetfed presses, sales of which had been badly hit in the first five months by a slump in the key US market. Judging by the response to KBA’s product launches, post-Drupa business also promises to be brisk. The total volume of sales generated by the fair cannot be calculated with any degree of precision until the autumn, since financing for certain export markets must still be clarified, and this has become more complex and time-consuming in the wake of the credit crisis.

Dusseldorf to host event for print buyers

With the drupacube, drupa 2008 will for the first time provide a special event aimed at the print buyer target group. As will be the case in the 19 halls, here too the spotlight will be on printed products – with one key difference. At the event inside the pavilion set up on the Rhine, the focus will be squarely on marketing-driven applications for printed products. The technology that makes this possible will play a subsidiary role. This shift in perspective offers one unbeatable advantage: Heads of marketing and publishing directors, production managers, account executives and creative directors will be able to take in print’s potential in the marketing mix in a compact format. “With this tool, we intend to attract print buyers to drupa in greater numbers. Undoubtedly, many of the exhibitors also have offerings catering to this target group. But at a technology fair of drupa’s kind, this type of information is often in danger of being drowned out,” said Manuel Mataré, drupa Project Director, describing the aim of the event. “The drupacube acts as a portal for print buyers by serving up concise infotainment on all things print communications and guiding them to exhibitors’ stands.”
