Low density PP aimed at replacing stiff plastic
Total Petrochemicals , a polypropylene (PP) producer headquartered in Houston, and Milliken Chemical, a division of Milliken & Company, collaborated on a new metallocene PP resin clarified with Milliken’s Millad® NX8000 technology. The new material, Total Petrochemicals’ Lumicene® M3382MZ polypropylene, produces thermoformed parts with superior clarity and gloss and excellent side wall stiffness. The resin is ideal for deli containers, drinking cups, lids, domes and food service trays when high clarity and stiffness are important. The combination of Milliken’s high-performance clarifier and Total’s proprietary metallocene technology will help drive expanded use of low-density PP as a cost-effective and environmentally responsible replacement for other clear plastic materials.

Read ArticleThe plastics success story keeps on going on
Plastics have an impressive track record as a material used for beverage and liquid food containers. In a comparatively short period of time they have developed into the most important type of packaging in this segment worldwide. However this success has also brought with it problems for the industry. For example crude oil, the basic raw material for plastics, is a dwindling resource, and supplying the plastic required will not become any easier if demand really takes off. Both developments are leading to a search for new approaches and alternative materials, so at drinktec 2009, World Fair for Beverage and Liquid Food Technology, it is not just about PET. Abbreviations such as PEN, PP, PS and PLA will also be hot topics for discussion in the Munich exhibition halls from 14 to 19 September.

Clear PP featuring Milliken’s Millad® technology offers attractive option to PET for glass replacement in packaging applications
Clear polypropylene (PP) clarified with Millad® 3988i from Milliken & Company is a better choice than polyethylene terepthalate (PET) for glass replacement in packaging applications, as Unilever South Africa Foods discovered.
