Plastics directive banning certain sealants

Commission Directive 2007/19/EC, the fourth amendment to “Plastics Directive” 2002/72/EC comes into effect shortly and no longer allows the use of certain phthalates as plasticisers in PVC-based closure seals that come into contact with food. One reason for this is the widening of the scope of the Plastics Directive to cover metal twist-off caps. The retailers, fillers and manufacturers of metal twist-off caps are desperately looking for alternative sealants.

BASF continuing research

Biodegradable plastics and plastics based on renewable raw materials are a constant part of BASF’s research and development activities. After the market introduction of Ecovio® LBX 8145 beginning of 2006, first lab samples of the new Ecovio L Foam will be available in October 2007. The material is designed for foamed food trays and fast-food boxes. Like its predecessor the new Ecovio L Foam consists of Ecoflex®, BASF’s biodegradable polyester, and the renewable raw material polylactic acid (PLA) (P 269).

GE sells plastics unit

GE (NYSE: GE) and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) today announced that they had reached agreement for SABIC to acquire GE Plastics for a purchase price of $11.6 billion. Announcement of the acquisition was made by Jeff Immelt, Chairman and CEO of GE and Mohamed Al-Mady, Vice Chairman and CEO of SABIC.

Profits up at Borealis

Borealis, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, announces a net profit of EUR 113 million for the first quarter of 2007, a 13% increase over the previous quarter. Net interest-bearing debt was reduced by EUR 61 million during the quarter, and the gearing ratio decreased from 34% in the fourth quarter of 2006 to 30%.

bioMérieux, Inc., a major player in the field of in vitro hosted the 2005 World Class Suppliers Summit to show appreciation for more than 80 of its largest suppliers. bioMérieux holds the summit once every two years to present awards to its World Class Suppliers in recognition of continued quality and on-time delivery. The summit was held 2005 at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, and was attended by approximately 200 guests. BASF presents new plastic

BASF’s light stabilizer Uvinul® 4050 H is the first monomeric HALS worldwide to obtain a Food Contact Notification (FCN) for the use in plastics with food-contact. The FCN is granted by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Uvinul® 4050 H may be used in polypropylene, polystyrene, styrene copolymers and acrylonitrile copolymers (including ABS) that come into contact with foodstuffs. Applications for Uvinul® 4050 H include woven fiber sacks such as bulk bags, flour sacks and corn (maize) sacks, electrical equipment such as kitchen equipment, thermoformed packaging such as yoghurt beakers and disposable cutlery.

Russian plastic production up 12%

Russian plastic production was up by 12% in the first half of 2006, compared with the first six months of 2005. Figures for polymers produced in June 2006 were 17.6% higher than in June of last year and May 2006 was up by 14.1% on 2005.
