Specialist plastics packaging technology business Petaineris to produce recyclable PET vodka bottles for Galatea, one of the largest suppliers to Systembolaget, the Swedish state monopoly alcohol retailer.

Petcore has announce that nearly 1.4 million tonnes of PET bottles were collected for recycle in Europe in 2009, and increase of more than 8%. Overall collection rose by nearly 2.5% from 46% to 48.4% of all PET bottle on the market.

The Packaging Community has undertaken a survey into decision making in packaging across 9 European countries and concluded that there is a big move towards environmentally-friendly and sustainable products. This is partly met in the trend towards lower weight, as discussed at the October 2009 AMI conference on Thin Wall Packaging held in Cologne, Germany. Jon Nash of AMI described typical applications: yoghurt, cheese, cream, fresh produce, bakery, yellow fats, ready meals, sandwiches, pet foods, frozen foods, etc. Dairy is the largest sector at almost 25% and chilled meals are among the fastest growing areas. PP and PS dominate, followed by PET and PVC with a small percentage of other materials.

Schwarzkopf & Henkel Production Europe has recently extended its successful hair care line Gliss Kur with a new variety, Asia Straight. The shampoo is again packed in the PET bottle family which was successfully introduced by Schwarzkopf & Henkel in 2008.

PIC (Process Integrated Coating) was presented the first time on the drinktec 2009 in Munich. This innovative technology for coating the PET preforms during the process is optimizing the transport of the PET pack-aging. Production stoppage due to a fan-like blockade of the packaging or the bottles on the transport bars are history. PIC was developed from the precoating technology, where Steidle GmbH spraying systems have been used successfully for years. With PIC, the operator of the filling device can apply this coating on his own more flexible, more precise and even more cost saving.

H&S Anlagentechnik has developed a new reactor type (MP = multi-material to polyol) for medium sized amounts. The new MP reactor is designed to produce 500 to 1000 tons of polyol per year and for the first time makes it possible to synthesize various raw materials to APP (aromatic polyester polyol) in one system.

Focus is on the range of “Original” sports closures, on the market in 28mm and 30-25 neck sizes, with other formats under development. A portfolio of custom closures for beverage and syrups will also be on show.

Rexam instant foam dispensing technology – and dry sprayer – were chosen for four of the new products in the Babyganics line of natural, non-toxic household solutions. Additionally, the Rexam M3 mini-foamer is used in a 50ml version of The Germinator Foaming Hand Sanitizer, making it perfect for on-the-go cleanups.

RPC Containers Llantrisant is supplying Tesco with a 1.5 litre PET bottle for the Tesco Finest Juice range.

The Martens brewery in Belgium, an extremely experienced filler of beer in PET bottles, has put a new line from KHS into operation. This consists of an InnoPET Blomax 8, an InnoPET Plasmax 12D for improving the gas barrier, an air conveyor, and the entire palletizing area. After being stored temporarily, the high quality barrier-coated PET bottles are then filled by a KHS filler, among others.

General Bottlers CR, the Czech subsidiary of Pepsi Americas, have selected the 28mm Original Sport Cap from Seaquist Closures for their recently launched new product Toma Natura still water in a 0.7litre bottle.

The combined forces of the economic downturn and environmental pressures are causing a sharp slowdown in the global bottled water market, according to a recent analysis by global beverage industry specialists, Canadean. The situation is most marked in the USA, where Canadean is forecasting annual growth of under 1% for the next five years. This is a significant deceleration from the double-digit rates seen from 2000 to 2008, and has major implications for the PET plastics industry, in particular.

RPC Containers Blackburn has developed a custom-moulded PET bottle for Asda’s new range of flavourings for home baking, offering convenient, safe handling and an impressive visual appearance.

A new synthesis process for generating polyol from PET materials is now being used industrially by Petopur GmbH, Schwarzheide. The processed materials are clean and carefully sorted PET, such as PET flakes, PET production waste and PET films. The planned annual production output is 4,000 tonnes of polyol (APP) for application in rigid foam processing. The start of production took place on 27.02.09 and was witnessed by about 30 representatives from politics and the economic council.

With the recent addition of two HyPET 300 systems, Retal Industries, a major packaging and component supplier in Russia and Eastern Europe, has extended its reliance on Husky Injection Molding Systems.
