High-end goods such as MP3 players, digital or video cameras have become increasingly popular with consumers in recent years. A trend which, unfortunately, has been attracting product pirates and grey marketeers as well. By selling fakes or goods that have been tampered with, they circumvent the regular market, frequently inflicting losses in the millions on manufacturers of branded products. The biggest damage is caused by loss of sales revenues, unjustified warranty claims, product liability actions and misuse in conjunction with returns and recycling practices. In addition, product piracy causes considerable damage to the image of brand manufacturers.
