JSC Kedainiai Canning Factory, a leading vegetable processor and producer of sauces in Lithuania has elected to provide its range of tomato ketchup with a new appearance.

Krones AG, Neutraubling, Germany, has developed a system called MouldXpress Advanced, which downsizes the change-over time for moulds in the Contiform, thus improving the availability levels of the stretch blow-moulding machine. The semi-automatic system integrated into the blowing wheel shortens the change-over time from about 3.5 minutes to less than one minute per blow-moulding station.

At this year’s Euromold, Hofmann Innovation AG will be presenting the world’s largest selective laser sintering (SLS) system for plastics in medical and pharmaceutical applications. With a usable volume of up to 1,500 mm x 500 mm x 500 mm (X|Y|Z axis), the “Hofmann Medea 1500” system now allows the sintering of large plastic components using a genuine single-step process. As a result, one-piece components with no adhesive joints or welded seams can be produced. For the first time ever, large components such as instrument panels and interior/exterior automotive parts can be manufactured using an inexpensive sintering process.

It was early in June 2009 that the thousandth Contiform stretch blow-moulding machine left the Krones factory in Neutraubling.

An innovation project has paved the way to BASF’s success in using a conven­tional stretch blow-molding machine to create the lightest half-liter polystyrene bottle ever: it weighs a mere 7.5 grams.

Haefner who specialise in plastic spools set up a medical clean room in just nine months. The production module is certificated in accordance with clean room Class 8 (ISO 14644) and is free of particles/germs in accordance with c’GMP* (current Good Manufacturing Practice) Class D. The South-German packaging-specialist Gaplast is one of the recipients of a DuPont Packaging Award 2008. The company’s patented Bag-in Bottle technology, for the manufacture of disinfectant bottles with a capacity of 1000 ml. and airless functionality (see picture 1), succeeded against almost 80 entries from Europe, America and Asia. According to the jury, principal reasons for its selection were the responsible deployment of resources and optimised energy usage during production. Roland Kneer, proprietor and managing director at Gaplast, along with Stephan Kneer, technical manager, accepted the award on the company’s behalf during a ceremony held at DuPont headquarters (Wilmington, Delaware, US) on 17th April 2008.

The "Tandem Blow" process developed by Bekum is increasingly proving to be an engine of efficiency. This process, first unveiled at the K1998, can point to an extremely successful market penetration after almost 10 years. The success of this technology ideally complements the trend towards small drinking yoghurt bottles, such as Actimel & Co.

Be it hairspray bottles, paint cans or oil tanks – thanks to BASF’s new Ultraform® E3120 BM, hollow objects with demanding requirements can now be made of polyoxymethylene (POM) by means of extrusion blow molding. In comparison to containers made of polyethylene (PE), they display considerable better barrier properties against gases such as oxygen, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Ultraform E3120 BM is resistant to many types of media such as alcohol, oil and hydrocarbons, and moreover, it can be sterilized with hot steam. This product is now available in commercial quantities.

Sidel has developed an alternative to traditional stainless steel molds used in HR blow molding. The new mold is made of lightweight aluminum, which is easier to machine than steel. Higher machine output is just one of the mold’s many benefits.

After a market launch in 2005, Sidel’s SBO Universal™ blow molding equipment has already brought in orders for 400 machines. The equipment’s impressive performance – a 20 percent reduction in bottle blowing costs, a 23 percent boost in productivity, and coverage of all output rates up to 51,000 bottles per hour – has prompted brisk sales around the world.

With the recent addition of two HyPET 300 systems, Retal Industries, a major packaging and component supplier in Russia and Eastern Europe, has extended its reliance on Husky Injection Molding Systems. From the initial machine supplied to their plant in the Czech Republic in 1994, followed in 1999 by the first machine supplied to Russia, Retal Industries has installed a total of 69 Husky systems to date. The company designated Husky as the main supplier for their PET preform systems more than five years ago.
