Paper supplier says it will be free from fossil fuel emissions
The board of management of the Holmen Group has given the go-ahead for a € 238 million investment for a new recovery boiler at Iggesund Mill which will considerably strengthen its flagship product Invercote. In addition to the recovery boiler the investment package also includes a new turbine plus equipment for capturing and incinerating weak, sulphur-containing gases – something that will further reduce the mill’s airborne emissions.

Due to a significant deterioration of the industrial framework conditions in Switzerland, MM Karton will discontinue cartonboard production at its Deisswil site. A drastic increase in Swiss emission levies made an impairment of EUR 14.2 million already necessary by year-end 2009 due to a considerable strain on future earnings. A comprehensive evaluation of the general set-up henceforth led to the conclusion that an economic continuation is not feasible anymore due to accelerated negative local productivity and cost development.

Mondi Syktyvkar announced that it had started up its new number four lime kiln which is a part of Mondi’s Syktyvkar STEP mill development project. This completion and start up took place beginning of December 2009. Mondi Syktyvkar started reconstruction of the white liquor plant in spring 2008, before the STEP project construction work was initiated. Erection of the lime kiln with a daily production capacity over 700 tonnes of lime (СаО) started in autumn 2008.

Over the course of the previous year, the Group’s coated and uncoated paper mills, its pulp mill and self-adhesive manufacturing site all successfully completed the strict environmental review required by the EMAS regulation. With this certification of the Uranga mill, Torraspapel’s base papers, used in the manufacture of carbonless paper, now meet the same requirements.

All that was needed was €74 million, 1,400 contractors and an unyielding desire to improve the quality of one of the world’s best paperboards – Invercote. In September Iggesund Paperboard implemented an extensive rebuild of the wet end of its board machine number 2 at Iggesund, Sweden. The project also included improving water treatment at the mill and installing a new lime kiln. The aim was not to increase production but rather to improve quality.
