At this year’s Euromold, Hofmann Innovation AG will be presenting the world’s largest selective laser sintering (SLS) system for plastics in medical and pharmaceutical applications. With a usable volume of up to 1,500 mm x 500 mm x 500 mm (X|Y|Z axis), the “Hofmann Medea 1500” system now allows the sintering of large plastic components using a genuine single-step process. As a result, one-piece components with no adhesive joints or welded seams can be produced. For the first time ever, large components such as instrument panels and interior/exterior automotive parts can be manufactured using an inexpensive sintering process.

Doyen Medipharm, a leading global provider of converting and packaging machines exclusively for the medical and pharmaceutical industries, introduces a new generation of thermoforming machines. Dedicated to the packaging of sterile medical products, the two machines, MT150 and MT250, will be officially launched into the world-wide medical device packaging market with a demonstration at the Doyen / J-PAC booth 1428 at MD&M East in New York.

Haefner who specialise in plastic spools set up a medical clean room in just nine months. The production module is certificated in accordance with clean room Class 8 (ISO 14644) and is free of particles/germs in accordance with c’GMP* (current Good Manufacturing Practice) Class D. An injection moulding machine having a locking force of 3,500 kN forms the core of the new production module.

How will packaging look in ten years? What are our consumption patterns, and what makes packaging sell? These are the questions Korsnäs asked young design students at the Packaging Impact Design Awards (PIDA). This year, concurrent competitions were held in Sweden, Germany and France. This year’s PIDA coincides with Korsnäs’ introduction of the new cartonboard Frövi White, and the contest assignment was to choose a luxury product in the beauty, beverage, confectionery, fashion, media or health & medical segment and design packaging for it using Frövi White These are the market segments for which Korsnäs introduced the new board, developed with focus on whiteness, smoothness and formability.

DSM Engineering Plastics has introduced Akulon XP, a high productivity grade of PA6 for film applications. Akulon XP offers a broader processing window leading to more flexibility and more uniform thickness distribution in cast film, more melt strength and better parison stability leading to optimized LDPE/LLDPE ratio in multi-layer films without sacrificing the mechanical properties, more shear thinning than with standard PA6 enabling thus higher coating velocities possible and still absolutely gel free.

The Package of the Year Award 2005 in the category “Medical” was awarded to Roche Diagnostics’ Accu-Chek Multiclix® lancing system. This award also honors the accomplishment of system supplier Wilden Group.
