Lafayette, the French department store chain, distributes eight million paper bags to its customers each year. In late March of this year, the bags were labelled with the official EU Eco-label, as they are manufactured of UPM’s eco-labelled paper. In order to receive the EU Eco-label, a product must satisfy a large number of strict environmental criteria in various areas. Lafayette’s bags are the first paper bags in the world to wear the label.

Avery Dennison announced today the launch of its new highly chemical-resistant labelstock, Fasson® Transfer PET Matt White Top Chem Res/S8015. Transfer PET Matt White Top Chem Res is offered with the Fasson® S8015 adhesive providing excellent adhesion to a wide range of surfaces, including low surface energy plastics and textured substrates. This new labelstock is specially suited to the automotive industry, for labelling laboratory equipment and for other industrial applications where there is a need to print labels that will resist aggressive chemicals while remaining readable.

The Fasson portfolio of self-adhesive wine labelling materials has been significantly expanded by Avery Dennison in terms of both products and the complementary specialty service offered to label converters. This niche end-use market has grown in recent years as wine producers and bottlers have come to accept the benefits of self-adhesive labels in terms of both ease of application and print capability -- particularly with today's advanced reel-to-reel digital presses.

Even before its launch at Labelexpo Europe 2007, new Fasson Lean Film from Avery Dennison had already won enthusiastic supporters – at Nova Milanese near Milan in Italy, for example, where label converter Maer and major international brand owner Bolton Manitoba were both highly satisfied with field trials using the new self-adhesive labelstock.

Skanem’s new LaBora® machine was first introduced in April 2007 when it was installed at the first customer site. The new machine has since then generated a great deal of interest in the market for label application. Divisional Manager at Skanem System in Linköping, Marcus Persson says: ‘By having this new, flexible machine on offer, we are able to meet customer needs of fast and secure label application in a unique manner. The interest so far has been great and we have already had several enquiries from existing as well as new customers.’

Numerous breweries and mineral water bottlers are indirectly affected by higher world market prices for dairy products. Traditionally used labeling adhesives contain casein obtained from cow’s milk. The price of casein has recently risen dramatically and, in the opinion of raw materials experts, is unlikely to decrease shortly. As an alternative, Henkel supplies innovative casein-free adhesives that are significantly less expensive and perform equally.

New Fasson® Lean Film™ thinner-gauge self-adhesive film labelstocks will challenge current conceptions of the cost of quality self-adhesive film labelling for bulk products in the personal and home care markets. The range is launched at Labelexpo by Avery Dennison, who say its unique proposition is the instant time- and cost-savings it creates for both brand owners and label converters.

The solution is part of the recently introduced Esko Software Suite 7. The collection of EskoArtwork’s plate making software, designed specifically for the imaging requirements of the label and tag industry, offers significant cost savings through automated flexo plate optimization, particularly when used along with a Cyrel Digital Imager (CDI) flexo plate setter and an Esko Kongsberg cutting table.

EskoArtwork, the world leader in packaging preproduction solutions, will introduce its Esko Variable Data Printing module at Labelexpo 07 in hall 5, stand B30. This new software module further expands EskoArtwork’s solutions for digital packaging and label printing. In the context of the OEM agreement with HP Indigo this means all HP Indigo industrial presses will be able to take full advantage of Esko Variable Data Printing.

Since January 1 2006, a new European 2004/27/CE directive makes Braille characters mandatory on all new pharmaceutical packaging in order to help the blind and visually impaired in the EU benefit from improved information. It has already been translated into German and Italian law.

Compose will also be teaming up with Epson to demonstrate Star Proof’s quality whilst driving the current range of inkjet printers.
