Theft major headache for German retail business

In the retail industry as a whole the inventory differences amount to 3.9bn euros per year, EHI states in an up-to-date survey. 53 percent of the losses due to shrinkage are caused by dishonest customers, which comes to almost 2,0bn euros. The retailers’ own employees are blamed for 23 percent or 900m euros. The remainder is put down to suppliers, service providers’ staff and organisational mistakes. From a statistical point of view, each German household, as before, steals more than 50 euros worth of goods from retail stores. Metaphorically speaking, this means that one in every 200 shop trolleys passes the checkout without being paid for. Meanwhile the government misses out on some 400m euros of VAT each year.

But with the exception of security presses demand was noticeably softer for newspaper and commercial web presses and special presses for niche applications. The group order intake for the first six months came to €489.1m, 31% below the prior-year figure of €708.8m which, however, had been boosted by the Drupa trade fair. Dealing with the problems of an aging population

In the year 2030, one third of the population will be over 65 years old; there will be more than 22 million pensioners and senior citizens. This demographic change does not have to be seen as a problem, but rather as an opportunity for the development of new products and services. This is especially the case for medical technology, a field in which Germany still plays a leading role on the international stage. This is demonstrated year in year out by the numerous innovations exhibited at the sector’s leading international event, MEDICA in Düsseldorf and the concurrently run COMPAMED, the main trade fair for the suppliers market for medical manufacturing. According to the Trend Report 2009 by the Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE, Frankfurt a.M.), medical technology is one of the sectors with the greatest innovation potential. This was resoundingly confirmed by a comprehensive survey of 1,300 companies and universities. “Innovative medical technology enables major cost savings in the health sector, mitigates the shortage of skilled personnel, and improves people’s quality of life in an aging society," explains Birgid Eberhardt, Spokesperson for AAL at the VDE. The term Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) refers to a range of intelligent assistance systems, which enable people to enjoy a long life at home in their familiar environment.

KBA denies that it needs State assistance

Since April German press manufacturer Koenig & Bauer (KBA) has seen a major upturn in new orders for sheetfed presses, with business drummed up at trade fairs in the Middle and Far East largely balancing a shortfall in the first quarter. This was the message delivered by Helge Hansen, KBA president and CEO since 27 March, at the company’s 84th AGM at the Vogel Convention Center in Würzburg. However, as Hansen warned the serried ranks of shareholders present, demand for big newspaper and commercial web presses remains unsatisfactory. “While we have increased our share of the global newspaper market to almost 50 per cent, the total volume of new orders booked in the first five months was well below our target for the year. The global recession and financial meltdown continue to impact on demand in the sector, and are now affecting sales of special presses for niche applications. At present the only bright spot in this gloom is the security printing sector.”

Bags still important in bulk goods distribution

Despite the availability of highly sophisticated silo logistics, bags continue playing an important role in the distribution of bulk goods. Especially for applications involving small batches or the packaging of demanding products, the manufacturers of chemicals, food, and non-food as well as mineral products tend to rely on bags because of their flexible use. When it comes to selecting the appropriate bagging system, the properties of the products to be packaged need to be taken into account. Free-flowing products such as PE resin or vitamin powder make other demands on the bagging technology than do heavy-flowing and/or powdery and dusty products such as E-PVC, starch or titanium dioxide. It is for this reason that engineering company Windmöller & Hölscher (W&H) is presenting at this year's ACHEMA with TOPAS and OPAL two different Form-Fill-Seal (FFS) packaging systems specially geared to these applications.

Financial crisis biting German manufacturer

The financial crisis is impacting severely on Germany’s export-driven engineering industry, and Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) is no exception. As the third-quarter figures issued on 14 November revealed, tumbling demand in key export markets caused the volume of new orders for sheetfed presses to fall 15.8% below the equivalent figure for 2007, while orders for web and special presses were 9.1% down on a weak prior year. The volume of orders on hand shrank by €160m to €721.6m, and this has caused major fluctuations in plant utilisation since the beginning of October. As a countermeasure, overtime and holiday accounts are being run down at KBA’s web press production plants, and the Christmas closure extended. As was also announced on 14 November, KBA’s sheetfed facility, which officially introduced short-time work at the beginning of November, is having to trim its payroll by 400.
