Read ArticleDemand for cups and lids increasing
US demand for cups and lids is expected to increase 4.4 percent per year to $8.2 billion in 2014. Gains will be driven by expanding food service revenues and favorable prospects for food service packaging cups. In addition, cup and lid demand will be supported by heightened emphasis on premium coffee by quick service restaurants and continued introductions of alternative beverages in food service establishments to offset the maturity of the soft drinks segment. Moreover, value gains will be bolstered by increasing demand for environmentally friendly cups, such as cups made from higher-value biodegradable resins or recycled content. These and other trends are presented in Cups & Lids, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm.

The whole German machinery construction industry was caught up in the financial and economic crisis from mid 2008 onwards. Last year, the worst for decades, the machinery construction industry had to cope with a real drop of almost 25 % according to the VDMA association [Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau]. The production volume dropped to 151 billion EUR. Growth also came to a halt in the food processing and packaging machinery sector due to orders from all major foreign markets falling off at the same time. The drastic drop was triggered solely by external factors connected with the worldwide crisis situation. With a slump of just under 17 % in production volume, the manufacturers of food processing and packaging machinery, some 600 companies with about 60,500 employees, were not hit as hard as the machinery construction industry overall. According to provisional figures from the Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Association [VDMA Fachverband Nahrungsmittelmaschinen und erpackungsmaschinen], the production value of this sector dropped to 9.230 billion EUR in 2009 (from 11.088 billion in 2008).

Read ArticleFood packaging under pressure from growing amount of red tape
The use of food packaging and other food contact materials is not without risk. Strict legislation is now in place to ensure the safety and hygiene of food packaging, including glues, inks and packages made from recycled materials. The main risk may now be the explosion of documents required to cover all aspects of the supply chain of packaged food products, from retailer and food packer/filler to the manufacturer of the package and its constituent materials. Central to all of this is Declaration of Compliance (DoC), needed to describe for instance a specific foil or ink in combination with one or more food applications. Retailers, food companies and food contact material suppliers together now face the task of documenting a great variety of packed food products in many different supply chain configurations. Standardisation, harmonisation and proactive cooperation are needed to prevent everyone from being buried under the load of an explosively growing number of DoCs.
