Aluminium foil exports increase in 2008
Exports of aluminium foil from Europe showed an increase of three per cent in the first half of 2008 bucking a general downward trend in sales which showed a decline to 432,800t from the record level of 452,000t in first half of the previous year, according to figures from European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA).

European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA) figures for the first quarter of 2008 show that 216,300 tonnes of alufoil was produced by its membership, some 5% down on the same period in 2007. UC RUSAL, the world’s largest aluminium and alumina producer, is pleased to announce plans to construct a packaging foil plant near the city of Dmitrov in the Moscow region. The project investment will amount to approximately USD 20 million. The plant will have an overall capacity of 20,000 tonnes of packaging foil per year and will increase UC RUSAL’s share of the Russian foil and foil-based packaging market by up to 66%.

During the third quarter the sales of aluminium foil kept stable while the sales during the first nine months slightly increased by 1.4 percent. According to the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA) Q3 sales reached 211,900 tons compared to 211,700 tons in the third quarter 2006. Nine months sales went up to 663,900 tons from 654,900 in 2006. The total sales which are still on record level had a decreased growth rate due to lower exports which reduced by eight percent from January until September. The usage inside the EAFA region* increased by 1.1 % in the third quarter and by 3.3 percent in the first three quarters of 2007.
