German beer an export hit
Although beer imports to Germany dropped by almost 13 percent in 2007, the Germans still enjoyed a Danish, Belgian, Czech, Dutch or British beer. German beer is an export hit. Over 12 million hl (+1.4 %) were enjoyed in the EU countries, mainly in Italy, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Spain. 15.4 million hl (+3.7 %) of German beer were drunk outside EU, especially in the USA, Canada, Switzerland and Russia according to the German Federal Statistics Office.

Bags being labelled with EU eco label
Lafayette, the French department store chain, distributes eight million paper bags to its customers each year. In late March of this year, the bags were labelled with the official EU Eco-label, as they are manufactured of UPM’s eco-labelled paper. In order to receive the EU Eco-label, a product must satisfy a large number of strict environmental criteria in various areas. Lafayette’s bags are the first paper bags in the world to wear the label.

EC attempts to reduce barriers to inter community trade
The European Commission has presented its list of eleven new fast track actions to reduce administrative burdens for companies, in order to enhance economic growth. They are the second package of such fast track actions and form part of the overall programme to reduce the administrative burdens for entrepreneurs, by 25 percent in 2012. These immediate measures are likely to generate significant benefits of around 1 Billion Euro through technical changes in existing rules (e.g. reporting obligations).

The European Commission has formally requested Hungary to amend its legislation on environmental charges applicable to beverage containers. The Commission believes that Hungary's system leads to de facto discrimination against products from other Member States. The request is in the form of a reasoned opinion which is the second stage of the infringement proceedings provided for in Article 226 of the Treaty. If Hungary fails to comply with the reasoned opinion within two months, the Commission may refer the matter to the Court of Justice of the European Communities.
