Sonoco (NYSE: SON), one of the largest diversified global packaging companies, today announced a 10 percent price increase on the plastic cartridges and plungers it supplies into the adhesives and sealants marketplace. The increase went into effect Aug. 15.

Metso Power, a part of Metso Paper business area, will supply SCA Packaging with an evaporation plant to the company's pulp and paper mill in Obbola on the east coast of Sweden. The print holding company, ARQUANA International Print & Media AG (ISIN DE0006781008), Neumünster, has sold its shares in WS 3021 Vermögensverwaltungs AG, Starnberg, the parent company of the Colordruck Pforzheim Group, to a strategic investor. In 2006 ARQUANA bought 94% of the shares in the company. The parties agreed not to disclose the purchase price. Herewith ARQUANA is reacting to the continuing high costs which originated during the integration and reorganisation of the printer.

Understanding sustainability
A formal definition of sustainable packaging is needed to provide a common platform of understanding against which the packaging supply chain can measure its efforts. This was the objective of the Definition of Sustainable Packaging released in October 2005 by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (www.sustainablepackaging.org). Drawing on fundamental eco-efficiency concepts and sustainability principles articulated by William McDonough and Michael Braungart in their book, "Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things," the definition outlines a framework for sustainability in the context of packaging and its related materials systems.
