Beer sales across West Europe fell by more than 4% in the first half of 2009 - the equivalent of 580 million litres, or more than a billion less UK pints of beer - according to leading beverage research agency Canadean’s Quarterly Beverage Tracker. Alcoholic drinks, as a whole have not fared much better, while soft and dairy drinks have slipped by around 1%, hot drinks have registered a very small rise and overall commercial beverage consumption has declined by a little over 1%.

Award for sport's drink
Aisacan bottle concept - the latest innovation utilising the Cyclero® technology - has been awarded with an Alufoil Trophy 2009 for its first commercial application for an iron sports drink. The concept is a joint development between Huhtamaki Ronsberg and Aisapack Vouvry. The Aisacan® WCUP bottle range developed for the Belgian sports nutrition products provider WCUP features a rigid top and bottom, while the body of the pack is a rotogravure pre-printed alufoil flexible laminate (PP/Printing/Adhesive/ALU/Adhesive/ PP). The European Bioplastics industry representation welcomes the regulation concerning bioplastic drink bottles established in the 5th Amendment of the German Packaging Directive. The amendment was passed on 4 April 2008. The regulation for bioplastic bottles will come into effect on 1 January 2009. These bottles "produced from at least 75 percent renewable resources" will be exempted from the compulsory deposit for single use drink bottles until 31 December 2012. Manufacturers must however participate in a dual system of recycling for the bottles.
