Value-adding DVD wins Korsnäs’ PIDA Germany design competition

How will packaging look in ten years? What are our consumption patterns, and what makes packaging sell? These are the questions Korsnäs asked young design students at the Packaging Impact Design Awards (PIDA). This year, concurrent competitions were held in Sweden, Germany and France. First out of the box was the Hochschule der Medien in Stuttgart. This year’s PIDA coincides with Korsnäs’ introduction of the new cartonboard Frövi White, and the contest assignment was to choose a luxury product in the beauty, beverage, confectionery, fashion, media or health & medical segment and design packaging for it using Frövi White These are the market segments for which Korsnäs introduced the new board, developed with focus on whiteness, smoothness and formability.

Understanding sustainability

A formal definition of sustainable packaging is needed to provide a common platform of understanding against which the packaging supply chain can measure its efforts. This was the objective of the Definition of Sustainable Packaging released in October 2005 by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (www.sustainablepackaging.org). Drawing on fundamental eco-efficiency concepts and sustainability principles articulated by William McDonough and Michael Braungart in their book, "Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things," the definition outlines a framework for sustainability in the context of packaging and its related materials systems.

The 19th Luxe Pack Monaco exhibition, which closed on Friday 27 October, more than ever confirmed its capacity to bring together the key players of the luxury packaging industry. Indeed, all indicators are positive: rise in the number of exhibitors and visitors (notably from the Americas and Asia). The 2006 results confirm the power and pertinence of the Luxe Pack exhibition to build up business and develop brand strategies. Swedish design for new markets

Competition was fierce and standards high when Sweden’s most prominent packaging design schools went head-to-head in Korsnäs’ PIDA design competition. This year’s theme was the health trend and the entries demonstrated the students’ creative approaches to customer friendly packages adapted to various sales channels like the Internet and speciality stores. “The designers of the winning entry made optimal use of shape, colour, punching and hanging features that did justice to the superb designability of Frövi cartonboard. A fine example of how the package can enhance the value of a simple product,” was the jury’s assessment.
