Plastic bottle manufacturer moves to Europe

Alpha Packaging, a manufacturer of plastic bottles and jars for the nutritional, pharmaceutical and personal care markets, has announced it will open its first European production facility in Roosendaal, The Netherlands, in April 2010. In addition to moving North American equipment to Europe, Alpha Packaging has also acquired the assets of SmartPET, a Netherlands-based blow molder of polyethylene terephthalate (PET bottles) and jars that recently entered into the liquidation process. Alpha has already begun moving the SmartPET machines and molds to the new facility.

PepsiCo sues packagers

PepsiCo has filed suit against the Pepsi Bottling Group and certain of its directors. The suit alleges that the defendants intentionally failed to provide notice of a recent PBG Board meeting to the PBG directors affiliated with PepsiCo. At that meeting, the directors in attendance claim to have adopted a “poison pill,” implemented certain new executive compensation arrangements and purported to amend the PBG bylaws in ways PepsiCo believes are detrimental to its rights as a shareholder. Because of the lack of notice and consideration by the full Board, PepsiCo alleges those actions by the Board at the meeting are invalid. PepsiCo further alleges that PBG and its Board breached their fiduciary duties to PBG shareholders by adopting the poison pill because it restricts PepsiCo's rights as a PBG shareholder and constitutes an unreasonable and disproportionate response to PepsiCo's constructive proposal. The suit seeks declaratory and injunctive relief.

Against all expectations the environmental performance challenge for PET bottles (3% penetration in beer packaging today) is not vs. glass bottles, but in fact vs. steel and aluminum cans. Award for Gaplast

The South-German packaging-specialist Gaplast is one of the recipients of a DuPont Packaging Award 2008. The company’s patented Bag-in Bottle technology, for the manufacture of disinfectant bottles with a capacity of 1000 ml. and airless functionality (see picture 1), succeeded against almost 80 entries from Europe, America and Asia. According to the jury, principal reasons for its selection were the responsible deployment of resources and optimised energy usage during production. Bioplastics to be exempt from German deposit scheme

The European Bioplastics industry representation welcomes the regulation concerning bioplastic drink bottles established in the 5th Amendment of the German Packaging Directive. The amendment was passed on 4 April 2008. The regulation for bioplastic bottles will come into effect on 1 January 2009. These bottles "produced from at least 75 percent renewable resources" will be exempted from the compulsory deposit for single use drink bottles until 31 December 2012. Manufacturers must however participate in a dual system of recycling for the bottles.
