Constantia Packaging gets full control of Duropack
The Ireland-based Jefferson Smurift Group has owned the 40% stake in Duropack AG ever since it acquired Interwell AG, while Constantia Packaging AG owned the remaining 60%. When the Jefferson Smurfit Group merged with Kappa Packaging AB, the two owners of Duropack AG increasingly began competing directly against one another in Eastern and Southeastern Europe.

Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE:WY) today announced the sale of its Containerboard Packaging and Recycling business to International Paper (NYSE:IP) for $6 billion in cash, subject to post closing adjustments. Weyerhaeuser said it expects to use a substantial portion of the after-tax proceeds from the sale to pay down debt.

Metso Paper will upgrade the pilot paper machines at its Paper Technology Center in Jyväskylä, Finland. The investment, which will cover both pilot PM 1 and PM 2, will radically improve their capabilities in creating new cutting-edge technologies for paper and board making. The total value of the investment is close to EUR 13 million. The project will be started immediately and finished by the end of 2009.

All that was needed was €74 million, 1,400 contractors and an unyielding desire to improve the quality of one of the world’s best paperboards – Invercote. In September Iggesund Paperboard implemented an extensive rebuild of the wet end of its board machine number 2 at Iggesund, Sweden. The project also included improving water treatment at the mill and installing a new lime kiln. The aim was not to increase production but rather to improve quality.
