Read ArticleGerman beverage technology leads in 2009
The whole German machinery construction industry was caught up in the financial and economic crisis from mid 2008 onwards. Last year, the worst for decades, the machinery construction industry had to cope with a real drop of almost 25 % according to the VDMA association [Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau]. The production volume dropped to 151 billion EUR. Growth also came to a halt in the food processing and packaging machinery sector due to orders from all major foreign markets falling off at the same time. The drastic drop was triggered solely by external factors connected with the worldwide crisis situation. With a slump of just under 17 % in production volume, the manufacturers of food processing and packaging machinery, some 600 companies with about 60,500 employees, were not hit as hard as the machinery construction industry overall. According to provisional figures from the Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Association [VDMA Fachverband Nahrungsmittelmaschinen und erpackungsmaschinen], the production value of this sector dropped to 9.230 billion EUR in 2009 (from 11.088 billion in 2008).

Read ArticleChina continues to be a major market for machinery suppliers
Demand for packaging machinery in China is projected to grow 8.7 percent annually to 59.5 billion yuan in 2014. Gains will be directly stimulated by growth in output of packaged goods such as food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. Moreover, an increase in the amount of packaging per product produced in China will also boost sales of packaging equipment. Increasing safety and hygiene requirements for many packaged goods will contribute to growing demand for high-end (e.g., more automated and versatile) types of packaging machinery, supporting market growth in value terms. Restraining growth somewhat will be government efforts to control overpackaging. These and other trends are presented in Packaging Machinery in China, a new study from the Beijing office of The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry research firm.

The German packaging machinery industry closed 2009 better than expected in view of the economic crisis. Sales dropped over the previous year by only 15 %, to the same level as in 2006, reports the association, the Fachverband Nahrungsmittelmaschinen und Verpackungsmaschinen im Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau (VDMA). Some 60 % of packaging machines go to the food and beverage industries, and another 20 % to the pharmaceutical industry. Export business in this sector also lost much of its dynamic in mid 2008. If the British market researchers at Canadean are right, the gap between Western Europe and Central and Eastern Europe will open up again this year. They assume that the recession in Western Europe will be much more marked than in many countries of Central and Eastern Europe, where it will only lead to a temporary drop in sales. Beverage sales in Central and Eastern Europe are to increase again this year and appreciably pick up speed in 2011. For beer sales in these markets, Canadean forecasts rises of 0.1 % for 2010 and 1.6 % for 2011 compared with 2010. The upward trend is to be more appreciable for non-alcoholic drinks, which could increase by 1.1 % in 2010 and by 2 % in 2011. However, these forecasts assume that the economic situation in these markets will distinctly improve in 2010 and that the slump in beverage consumption due to the long winter can be compensated for by a warm summer.

And what does the label of the future 'say'? At drinktec 2009, World Fair for Beverage and Liquid Food Technology, it´s not all about the technology used to manufacture and bottle beverages and liquid food – it is also of course about the products themselves.
