On July 4, 2008 Mondi Frantschach inaugurated a Bag Application Centre (BAC) at the site of its R&D Innovation Centre. The already successful development work now also covers packaging technology research. In his opening speech, Peter J. Oswald, CEO of the Mondi Division Europe & International, stressed that Mondi is now in an even better position to provide comprehensive customer-oriented product development from fibre resources to the final packaging solution.

Lafayette, the French department store chain, distributes eight million paper bags to its customers each year. In late March of this year, the bags were labelled with the official EU Eco-label, as they are manufactured of UPM’s eco-labelled paper. In order to receive the EU Eco-label, a product must satisfy a large number of strict environmental criteria in various areas. Lafayette’s bags are the first paper bags in the world to wear the label.

The South-German packaging-specialist Gaplast is one of the recipients of a DuPont Packaging Award 2008. The company’s patented Bag-in Bottle technology, for the manufacture of disinfectant bottles with a capacity of 1000 ml. and airless functionality (see picture 1), succeeded against almost 80 entries from Europe, America and Asia. According to the jury, principal reasons for its selection were the responsible deployment of resources and optimised energy usage during production.
