Henkel has taken over from Akzo Nobel the Adhesives and Electronic Materials businesses previously owned by National Starch. “This acquisition represents a milestone in our 130-plus-year corporate history and points Henkel clearly in the direction of further profitable growth,” said Ulrich Lehner, Chairman of the Management Board of Henkel KGaA. The acquisition was preceded by the carve-out of the businesses to be acquired by Henkel and the requisite antitrust and anticompetitive investigations by the relevant authorities.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Food Contact Notification (FCN) 772 to allow direct food contact with UV or electronic beam formulations. The FCN772 clears that the UV or EB cured formulations may be used as coatings or components of coatings (both including inks) on polymeric substrates, paper and paperboard, metal substrates, or as a component in adhesives.

Süd-Chemie had alleged infringement of the U.S. Patent No. 5793942 by Multisorb’s TranSorb® sorbent packs. On September 7, 2007, the United States District Court in the Western District of Kentucky ruled Süd-Chemie’s patent invalid, and dismissed Sud Chemie’s patent infringement case against Multisorb.

Henkel anticipates run on casein-free adhesives
Numerous breweries and mineral water bottlers are indirectly affected by higher world market prices for dairy products. Traditionally used labeling adhesives contain casein obtained from cow’s milk. The price of casein has recently risen dramatically and, in the opinion of raw materials experts, is unlikely to decrease shortly. BASF will expand its plant for low molecular weight, highly reactive polyisobutene (HR PIB), which is marketed globally under the Glissopal® trademark, at its Verbund site in Antwerp, Belgium. BASF will thereby increase its capacity for Glissopal® in Antwerp by 25 000 tonnes to a total of 100 000 tonnes per year. The start up of the expanded capacity is planned for March 2008.
