The 2008 BEST OF PACKFORUM AWARD took place on 17 September 2008 during the fifth Retail Press Day. The contest invites international chief editors of retail publications to vote for the best Packforum® packaging amongst 15 innovative European retail packs. Editors are asked to evaluate each pack, giving a score between 1 and 10 for each of the following criteria: convenience, presentation appeal, food safety, merchandising and environmental impact.

Rot Front, one of the market leaders in the Russian confectionery market, has chosen Amcor TwistAll for its latest line of individually wrapped chocolate covered Halva. The candy sized Halva comes in three different varieties: almond, cappuccino and sesame.

NORDENIA INTERNATIONAL AG is strengthening its position as the leading manufacturer of flexible packaging in Russia. The globally operating film and packaging company is investing around EUR 25 million into its Russian plant. “This means that we will further be able to expand our excellent position in Russia’s dynamically growing market with globally active consumer goods manufacturers and among local customers,” explained Ralph Landwehr, Chairman of the Executive Board at NORDENIA INTERNATIONAL AG, during the recent opening celebrations in Pereslavl Zalesskiy, 130 kilometers north-east of Moscow.

Today, the use of screw-feeding multihead weighers is well-established and appreciated with many manufacturers of fresh and sticky products. Will the change in president in Russia effect our business? The answer is almost certainly no. Heinz, the US-based global food company, is a chosen supply partner of fast food restaurants chain McDonald’s in Russia for the production of liquid products. SCHOTT Pharmaceutical Packaging, a leading worldwide supplier of parenteral packaging to the pharmaceutical industry, has decided to build the company’s first production facility located in the Russian Federation. The new plant is expected to become operational in 2009. The facility will be based in Bor, a city located near the fourth largest city in Russia, Nizhny Novgorod.

In collaboration with a Russian partner, Germany's leading manufacturer of tin-plate packaging is building a facility in the greater Moscow region to produce tin-plate packaging for the industrial chemicals sector.

A World Bank report has found that the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union are experiencing a third transition, a transition that overlaps with their recent political and economic transitions. In 2025, more than one in five Bulgarians will be more than 65 years old—up from just 13 percent in 1990. Ukraine’s population will shrink by a fifth between the years 2000 and 2025. And the average Slovene will be 47.4 years old in 2025—among the oldest in the world.

Russians would appear to be among the least convinced on the value and quality of private label products that can be increasingly found on the shelves of Russian supermarket chains. The 8th Moscow International Exhibition “Pharmtech – Technologies of Pharmaceutical Industry 2006” will take place in Expocentr from the 20th to the 23rd November 2006. This is the only specialised event in Russia and CIS dedicated to pharmaceuticals production. For the first time the exhibition will be held in a new venue, modern architecture and developed infrastructure of which provide for holding events up to the highest standards.

From October 9th-13th companies from all over the world met each other in Moscow at AgroProdMash, the leading exhibition for food processing and packaging technology. Over 40.000 specialized visitors had the opportunity to inform themselves about the latest developments and machinery.

With the recent addition of two HyPET 300 systems, Retal Industries, a major packaging and component supplier in Russia and Eastern Europe, has extended its reliance on Husky Injection Molding Systems. From the initial machine supplied to their plant in the Czech Republic in 1994, followed in 1999 by the first machine supplied to Russia, Retal Industries has installed a total of 69 Husky systems to date. The company designated Husky as the main supplier for their PET preform systems more than five years ago.
