Fitch downgrades several emerging markets
Following the conclusion of its global review of the sovereign ratings of 17 major investment-grade 'emerging market' economies, Fitch Ratings downgraded the sovereign ratings of Bulgaria, Hungary, Kazakhstan and Romania, while it affirmed the sovereign ratings of, among others, Poland.

VPK Packaging Group plans to invest 200 mio EUR in a new paper mill to produce 300.000 tons per year of light weight recycled corrugated case material (80-160 g/m²). There has been taken an option for this new plant on a location in Zeitz, Germany and in Wroclaw, Poland. The construction will take 2 years and would be operational in 2011. The mill will create 150 new direct jobs and beside it 100 indirect jobs in the neighbourhood of the plant.

Rail strike fails to stop Brau Beviale
A rail strike and snow storms marked the start of BRAU Beviale 2007 in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg (14-16 November), but this did not deter the 34,456* trade visitors (2006: 36,260*) at this year’s most important capital goods exhibition for the beverage industry. Bloomberg reports that Pannonplast Nyrt, a Hungarian exporter of plastic yoghurt cups, will spend Ft 355 million ($1.6 million) setting up a consumer packaging unit in Serbia to add a third foreign market to its operations. Pannonplast, based in Budapest, expects production to start in the Q1 of 2007, it said in a stock exchange statement. By having a company in Serbia, Pannonplast will be exempt from a 20% customs levy it currently must pay. The company, which also operates in Romania and Ukraine, has been selling property and unprofitable units to stem losses and concentrate on consumer packaging. It will spend a total of € 10 million ($12.8 million) on building the plant in Serbia this year and buying another in Bulgaria in the H1 of next year CFO Dénes Gyimóthy said Aug. 1. Pannonplast expects its Serbian unit to contribute Ft 400 million to revenue in its first year of operation, which will probably triple in three years, the company said.
