Bristol-based consultants, Applied Market Information Ltd. has been monitoring and analysing the thermoplastics compounding sector in Europe for more than 20 years and the company recently published the tenth edition of “AMI’s guide to the thermoplastics compounding industry in Europe”, which aims to list all compounding operations across Europe. Over the past two years, since the last edition, the number of producers has increased slightly from 680 to 707, but AMI notes that the industry continues to shift eastward with most of the new sites listed in the guide setting up in Central Europe. Within Western Europe there has been less change compared with previous editions, but there has been a drop in the number of UK and Italian sites.

Property investment turnover in Central & Eastern Europe (CEE) totaled approximately €100 million in April through a total of five transactions, according to CB Richard Ellis’ CEE Property Investment MarketView for April 2009. While this means that property investment remained low in April compared to previous years, it was about 32% higher than the monthly average for the first quarter of 2009. April’s transactions included three retail transactions along with one office and one industrial transaction. Jos Tromp, Head of CEE Research & Consulting, explains: “The core Central European markets of the Czech Republic and Poland accounted for four of the five April investment transactions and remain the most active CEE markets not only in terms of transactions closed, but also in terms of investor interest.”

Health, Family and Quality of Society - The Cornerstones of Quality of Life in Europe
More than two out of three people in the UK rate their own health as very good or good, higher than average across the European Union, according to the Second European Quality of Life Survey (2EQLS), carried out by Eurofound, the Dublin-based EU Agency. People also rate the quality of and access to their health care system relatively high similar to Norway, Germany and Spain. According to the survey, the British have little trust in their political institutions, rating it on a par with levels recorded in the twelve new EU Member States. The survey, to be launched under the Czech EU Presidency in Prague on 25 March, also reveals that Europeans are generally satisfied with their quality of life despite big variations between both levels of life satisfaction and happiness, especially among the 12 new EU Member States.

Stora Enso is planning additional production curtailments in its Wood Products business area through temporary mill closures, shift reductions, efficiency measures and extended maintenance stoppages in Finland, Estonia and the Czech Republic. The Group has already recently agreed similar measures in Austria, Sweden and the Baltic States. In addition, Stora Enso plans to restructure its joinery component business in Estonia by permanently closing down the Viljandi component mill and transferring the business to Imavere sawmill. These planned new measures and already agreed new measures would reduce total production by about 1.2 million cubic metres per year in Finland, the Baltic States, Austria, the Czech Republic and Sweden.

Rail strike fails to stop Brau Beviale
A rail strike and snow storms marked the start of BRAU Beviale 2007 in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg (14-16 November), but this did not deter the 34,456* trade visitors (2006: 36,260*) at this year’s most important capital goods exhibition for the beverage industry. Retal installs new equipment
With the recent addition of two HyPET 300 systems, Retal Industries, a major packaging and component supplier in Russia and Eastern Europe, has extended its reliance on Husky Injection Molding Systems. From the initial machine supplied to their plant in the Czech Republic in 1994, followed in 1999 by the first machine supplied to Russia, Retal Industries has installed a total of 69 Husky systems to date.
