Rewe to sell Billa in Poland
The German retail group Rewe intends to sell the Polish Billa supermarket chain to E.Leclerc, the French chain, according to a report in Rzeczpospolita. The companies have not disclosed the value of the transaction, but the newspaper estimates that it is expected to be around €30m.Billa consists of 25 supermarkets, and E.Leclerc manages around 20 hypermarkets in Poland. According to Andrzej Falinski of the Polish Organisation of Commerce and Distribution (POHiD), quoted by the newspaper, the Billa stores, which are in a smaller format than those of the French retailer’s establishments, will allow E.Leclerc to diversify its offer.
At present E.Leclerc is waiting for the approval of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK). The rebranding is due to commence in 2009/2010.
Rewe does not, however, plan to withdraw from Poland. The group also manages 12 cash and carry stores under the Selgros name in Poland and will continue to develop that chain. It plans to set up three establishments by the end of 2010.
