Absorbing impact and external pressure
A transport packaging material has to meet the individual protection requirements of high-quality,fragile products to avoid damage as the result of mechanical stress and strain, temperature fluctuations or weather influences. At the same time, optimum packaging is a decisive factor in ensuring logistic operations run smoothly, for example, in storage/stock-keeping applications or in effectively utilising freight space. The new product line Alveobloc from Sekisui Alveo meets the demanding requirements of industry: With its omogeneous, closed cellular structure, the polyolefin foam guarantees impact damping and insulation properties. Added to this,
Alveobloc is for all material cutting processes – from milling and punching through to water jet cutting – allowing great freedom in design creativity. The odourless foam block is made from physically cross-linked Alveolen roll-foam which can be laminated with hot air up to a thickness of 120 millimetres.
Alveobloc made from laminated roll-foam offers a wide range of properties: Each layer comprises a homogeneous, closed cellular structure with evenly distributed volume weight. This is the basis for uniform compression hardness, which effectively absorbs impact or external pressure. By contrast, the density of foammoulded block foam is not uniformly distributed. Due to the manufacturing process, the density inside a block is often only made from roll-foam and laminated with hot air.
50 percent of the density at the edges. Consequently, the irregular compression hardness in the packaging material can have a negative effect during transport. In addition, cavities or other inclusions can occur during the production of conventional block foam material.
Further processing made easy
“Alveobloc is easy to use and can be further processed in a number of different ways to produce precisely-tailored packaging solutions”, explains Oliver Bürklin, Market Manager at Sekisui Alveo AG. In addition to providing protective padding for high quality goods, Alveobloc is the preferred material for case inserts and returnable packaging applications. Since this base material is physically cross-linked roll foam, Alveobloc is free of silicone and inorganic fillers such as talc or chalk. This means there is no need to remove adhered silicone on processing machines and machine wear is reduced to a minimum. Since the water absorption rate is less than one percent thanks to the closed cellular structure,
Alveobloc is particularly suitable for water jet cutting. The finished components don’t have to send through intricate drying processes subsequently.
Alveobloc features a skin with a smooth and even surface that can be used on both sides. This scratch-resistant layer can be used as a function surface and design element and does not need to be removed as is the case with foam-moulded block foam materials.
Sekisui Alveo block foam also comes with angular trimmed edges so that it is no longer necessary to cut the material to achieve even surfaces and exact 90 degree angles prior to further Alveobloc from Sekisui Alveo is the base material for preciselytailored, individual packaging solutions,e.g. case inserts processing. Furthermore, Alveobloc features barely measureable emission values and is resistant to temperatures of up to 110 degree Celsius. Since the foam is not a breeding ground for bacteria or germs and offers outstanding resistance to chemicals, Alveobloc can also be used effectively for the long-term storage of products.
Five products are currently available in the standard size of 2000 x 1200 millimetres in black. They come in two material
thicknesses of 50 and 100 millimetres. Sekisui Alveo also offers products made from permanently conductive foam for special projects. For an efficient, time-saving delivery the material is supplied on stackable non-returnable pallets.
