Consumers all over the world want their beverages to have aroma and taste, but as few calories as possible. The beverages industry is trying to meet this demand in a variety of ways. drinktec 2009, the World Fair for Beverage and Liquid Food Technology, is now launching its first Innovations Forum on Sweetening concepts, in cooperation with 'Dr. Harnisch International Publications' of Nuremberg.

Between 14 and 19 September 2009, leading manufacturers in the industry will be presenting their concepts and beverages at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. The forum will present a complete review of all the available sweetening agents – in particular sugar, sugar substitutes and sweeteners – and their characteristics and applications in beverages. Below are some of the exhibitors taking part in this forum:

BENEO-Palatinit
BENEO-Palatinit will present the low glycemic carbohydrate Palatinose™ during drinktec 2009’s “sweetening concepts” innovations forum.
The disaccharide Palatinose™ (isomaltulose) breaks the boundaries in terms of sweeteners and functional ingredients. Derived exclusively from pure beet sugar, it is the only known fully digestible but slowly released carbohydrate with a low glycemic effect.

Although it provides the same amount of energy as sucrose, Palatinose™ is broken down and fully absorbed over a longer period of time. Strong fluctuations in blood glucose levels and a high insulin secretion can thus be avoided. The result: A steady and prolonged energy supply in form of glucose. Moreover, Palatinose™ promotes fat oxidation.
With a sweetening profile that closely resembles that of sugar and about half of its sweetening power, Palatinose™ is mainly suitable as functional sweetening component in sports- and wellness beverages. Depending on the product concept, every desired sweetness level can be achieved by combining Palatinose™ with other sweeteners.
During drinktec 2009, BENEO-Palatinit will explain the nutritional advantages of Palatinose™ and give an overview of latest scientific studies as well as application possibilities.

Nutrinova
Sweetener blends with Sunett® (Acesulfame K) continue to be the golden standard for sugar reduced sweetness. Nutrinova’s Sunett® Multi-Sweetener Concept, which offers tailor-made sweetening solutions in combination with various nutritive and non-nutritive sweeteners, has continuously been extended with emerging sweeteners over the past years. Due to its unique sweetness profile, the zero-calorie sweetener Sunett® is the perfect blending partner for all kinds of beverages. Sugar reduction from 20 percent right up to 100 percent is possible.
Based upon a number of proprietary sensorial studies with Sunett® in blends, Nutrinova has developed a comprehensive taste interaction database for several flavours and beverage sub-segments, all of which prove that blends with Sunett® give unparalleled taste results.
At this year’s drinktec, Nutrinova will present several sweetening concepts with different sweetening partners in growing market segments such as ready-to-drink (RTD) teas, energy drinks and flavoured waters. Product concepts which demonstrate these options will be available for sampling at the show’s “sweetening concepts” innovation forum.
