dvi awards German Packaging Prizes
More than 200 participants anxiously awaited the result of this year’s German Packaging Prize in the conference centre of the Nuremberg Trade Fair Centre. Dr. Roland Fleck, economic consultant of the city of Nuremberg, welcomed the fact that the award ceremony was for the first time taking place in line with the BRAU Beviale. In his keynote Andrej Kupetz, Managing Director of the Design Council, indicated the significant importance of packaging for the development and success of brands using current examples. Burkhard Lingenberg, board member of the dvi and the chairman of the jury, Dr. Klaus Peter Stadler, presented the coveted trophies to the 22 recipients. Alexandra Tapprogge, radio and television journalist was the host of the 2-hour programme and the subsequent reception.
Needle-Trap is an excellent example for a functional and user-friendly design. For the first time the needle shield was integrated into the label. The cost-effective solution prevents accidental puncture wounds in the area of medicine. The concept study Nitropouch represents a milestone for lightweight beverage containers. 500 ml of bottled water can be packed with only 6.6 g. In doing so, the style underlines the fundamental idea of sustainability and of the future-oriented overall concept. On the subject of user-friendliness Smart Opening offers a surprising solution for folded boxes and carrying boxes. Here, small changes in the construction of the opening lead to a significant improvement for the consumer. The new Bamboo Telescope Mascara excels with innovative technology, functionality and convenience. The solution with minimised space requirement offers major potential for design variations and is applicable for other cosmetic products. It satisfies the increasing demand of products which are aimed at increasing frequent travel.
With the German Packaging Prize the dvi annually awards prizes to innovative and creative packaging ideas under the patronage of the Federal Minister for Economicsand Technology Michael Glos. Since as early as 1963 the German Packaging Prize has been giving the industry vital impulses and has been setting patterns for current and future developments for new applications, materials, layout, upgrading and mechanical engineering. It is aimed at manufacturers, developers, designers and promotes novel ideas from students, trainees and pupils. This year the mechanical packing engineers and suppliers were again called on who are awarded prizes in a three-year cycle for innovative technical and technological solutions for the packaging industry.
Apart from the economical and technical aspects, the jurors also consider the design, the user- and environment-friendliness for the fixed assessment criteria. The 22 awards provide an impressive outline of the current stage of development in our industry. Innovation and inventiveness is also shown here in an unspectacular manner and often only small changes create great improvements from economic efficiency to the aesthetic appearance. And, that also applies to all 54 nominations which we have awarded prizes to for their innovations from the total of 326 submissions, Burkhard Lingenberg, board member of the dvi and as chairman of the advisory board with the overall responsibility for the German Packaging Prize sums up.
The recipients come from all sectors and areas revolving around the subject of packaging: food/cosmetics/pharmaceutical industry, packing material and packaging manufacturers, branded companies, designers and agencies. The diversity of the submissions did not make it easy for the independent and prominent jury; it was supported by 11 experts from 8 national trade associations for special packing materials and packaging means. A total of 22 prizes are awarded in all 7 categories:
4 prizes for sales packaging, 3 transport packaging, 3 for design, layout and upgrading, 2 for display and promotion, 4 for mechanical engineering which prizes are only awarded to as categories every 3 years. The jury also awarded 3 prizes respectively for prototypes and for the new talents prizes for students, apprentices and pupils with the thematic priority “Easy Opening” and “User-friendly Packaging “. The successful promotion of young talents of the German Packaging Prize was also able to establish itself this year in the international competition. For instance the student Susanne Hermann was awarded a prize at the World Star Student Competition 2008 for her blister folding box for tablets suitable for senior citizens.
