The interpack’s 50th anniversary was not the only reason for the organizers to celebrate: With 2,744 exhibitors, the anniversary event was the greatest interpack in history. ELAU, Schneider Electric’s packaging specialists, also had reason to celebrate: interpack 2008 was the most successful trade fair of all times for the packaging automation supplier.
Nearly 15 years of specialization in the automation of packaging machines led up to this success: More than 222 of the packaging machines presented at interpack 2008 were automated with ELAU machine and motion control technology. Compared to interpack 2005, this represents a growth of almost 60 percent, proving the company’s increasing dominance in this industry.

Interpack 2008 was the most successful trade fair in the company history of ELAU AG
Today, the company has established itself worldwide as supplier of one of the most innovative automation systems for packaging machines. The trend began with the launch of a purpose-built automation system that integrated motion and logic functionalities in a unified IEC 61131-3 conpliant control platform. For the first time, significant savings in the development and total cost of packaging machinery ownership became possible.

With the integration of robotics into the same control platform, additional engineering tools, new controller and motor generations, and an expanding library of software functions, ELAU has continued to maintain its leadership position.

Interpack 2008 also showed to what extent ELAU struck a chord with the industry by launching Intelligent Servo Module technology, greatly simplifying and increasing the potential flexibility of packaging systems. Since the introduction of the servo modules, the majority of existing ELAU customers and a number of new customers are using the integrated servos in their new designs. Among the new customers is Rontech, a Swiss-based company that presented its SpaceFeeder at interpack, a completely new kind of collating infeed system for packaging processes. Leveraging Intelligent Servo Modules, the SpaceFeeder is a compact mobile unit despite using many servo drives. Using conventional cabinet-mounted servo drives, the size of the electrical cabinet would have made the design impractical.

An ELAU customer only since the beginning of 2008, Rontech introduced a new technology with a completely new machine design in a very tight time frame, in time for interpack. Such short development times are made possible by ELAU’s sophisticated engineering environment and the physical simplicity of servo module installations. In this example, the entire project, including hardware installation and commissioning, was completed within eleven weeks.

Jörg Roncoletta, CEO of Rontech, confirms this:
“It is impressive how fast a complex servo system can be commissioned by means of the ELAU technology.”
