On July 4, 2008 Mondi Frantschach inaugurated a Bag Application Centre (BAC) at the site of its R&D Innovation Centre. The already successful development work now also covers packaging technology research. In his opening speech, Peter J. Oswald, CEO of the Mondi Division Europe & International, stressed that Mondi is now in an even better position to provide comprehensive customer-oriented product development from fibre resources to the final packaging solution.

All packaging requirements, from the filling process through handling to providing protection against
climatic factors, must be taken into consideration during bag development. Changing conditions and
special requirements of the fillers demand that bag design be continually adapted. Using state-of-the
art analysis procedures, the BAC provides the foundation for targeted packaging optimization. The
many years of extensive production know-how of the over 40 Mondi Bag Converting plants ensure that
research results are efficiently put into practice so customers can benefit from the high-performance
industrial bags in their filling processes. Mondi’s state-of-the art plants and production processes don’t
leave anything to chance and Mondi Bag Converting application engineers are now able to provide
customers even better support with respect to filling and bag design.
In the BAC laboratory, specific situations of bag application can be simulated for customers whereas
paper manufacturing and processing requirements are covered by the R&D Innovation Centre. A
series of tests are used to analyse the essential properties of industrial bags, from de-aeration
behaviour during filling to storability of the contents under different climatic conditions as well as drop
tests to detect possible weak areas of the filled bag to make it resistant to rough handling. To this end,
investments were made in state-of-the-art technology, such as a high-speed camera recording the
drop test with 1000 pictures per second and the climatised room where storage behaviour under
conditions ranging from 10-90rH(%), 20-38oC can be reproduced.
Around 20 highly qualified research associates lay basis for developing cutting-edge products and
solutions in both the R&D Innovation Centre and the BAC. Research at the Frantschach location can
now assist the entire development process from wood fibres to industrial bags.
The motto of the opening ceremony, which enjoyed a large international attendance, was “Bags of
solutions” - solutions that offer the customer clear benefits. A podium discussion attended by Karine
Albert-Reynard, Purchasing Manager of Weber & Broutin France and representatives from Mondi Bag
Converting gave example for the close cooperation and know-how necessary during customer oriented
product development and ultimately for providing a bag solution tailored to the clients’
success.
