The Swiss Institute for Packaging has presented the international Swiss Star awards for new products in the sector at Zurich's Belvoirpark.

Prize-winning packaging in various categories was singled out for its innovation and creativity. The Swiss Star went to two types of retail packaging, one type of shipping packaging, a labelling system, two prototypes, with two special prizes for design.

The Swiss Wipf company won the Swiss Star prize in the “prototypes” category for the biological materials used in its new self-supporting bag. In an effort to deal with the rising cost of petroleum and the CO2 emissions problem, Wipf designed a new product made with between 80% to 97% biological materials, while retaining full barrier-forming properties. The composite material is made up of a layer of paper, a barrier layer and a bioplastic layer.

The bag was developed using a special grade of Mater-Bi®, the bioplastic developed by Novamont, which is naturally biodegradable and compostable in compliance with Italian regulation UNI10785, but which nonetheless guarantees a resistance and strength very similar to traditional plastics, and contains renewable resources of agricultural origin, thereby reducing the emission of greenhouse gasses and saving consumption of energy and non-renewable resources. It thus completes a virtuous circle: raw materials of agricultural origin are returned to the soil by way of biodegrading and composting processes without the production of pollutants.

The Wipf bag is suitable for dry or slightly damp foodstuffs (coffee, tea, breakfast cereals, biscuits, etc.), but also for dry animal food or for non-food applications.
