Paul Mines from Stanelco comments on how good it is to see so much interest in bio materials for packaging and on what he believes to be the world's first biodegradable tube.

For what is believed to be the first time a 100% biodegradable flexible tube was presented at Interpack by Aisapack and Stanelco BioPlastics.

Biodegradability and sustainability are the key drivers in the development of this new

revolutionary package. Whilst all the materials of construction are biodegradable, substantial levels of sustainability are achieved through the use of potato and corn starches.

Firstly these materials offer the advantage of using renewable resources. This allows reductionin consumption of fossil resources and moreover in a reduction of CO2 emission compared to oil-based plastics.

Secondly the material is biodegradable meaning that it will not persist in the environment as long as oil based plastics and it can be composted, offering an eco-friendly disposal route or second natural life to the package back in the ecosystem.

The biodegradable materials used are Bioplast® resins commercialised by Stanelco plc, UK.

Aisapack and its sister company Aisa, Switzerland; have developed the processing capability in order to obtain state-of-art flexible tube packaging with industrial scale equipment for tube production.

This biodegradable tube is constructed from an extruded sleeve cut-off at the desired length.

The moulded shoulder is then directly compression moulded onto the sleeve using an Aisa’s PTH machine. Decoration has been directly applied on the finished tube using dry offset printing.

The biodegradable tube has an agreeable ergonomic feel thanks to seamless and flawless

bonding and forming. This offers great consumer appeal coupled with good gas barrier

properties - this biodegradable tube is ideally suited for the natural cosmetic, personal care, and food markets.

Stanelco Bioplastics sells a range of Bioplast® resins. All Bioplast® resins are biodegradable and many of them are compostable in thin section forms. Biodegradable materials break down naturally in the environment when they are appropriately disposed of and turn back into natural raw materials.

The Bioplast® resin range is manufactured as sustainably as possible and finished products typically contain 40% to 100% of plant derived materials.

Stanelco BioPlastics is a division of Stanelco plc, a technology based company with a highly innovative and ecologically relevant range of products and intellectual property. Stanelco plc is quoted on the London stock Exchange.

Stanelco BioPlastics is a technical market leader in Europe with a range of products capable of replacing oil-based plastics in many applications with high levels of sustainably derived feedstocks. Derived from natural corn and potato starch, the biopolymers make functional, long-life plastic products that biodegrade back to nature.

Stanelco BioPlastics sells its innovative polymers under the trade name Bioplast®. These materials are manufactured in Germany in its Biotec production and development subsidiary; a business with 17 years experience in developing truly functional bioplastics. Biotec is certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 and DIN EN ISO 14001:2004.
