Lafayette, the French department store chain, distributes eight million paper bags to its customers each year. In late March of this year, the bags were labelled with the official EU Eco-label, as they are manufactured of UPM’s eco-labelled paper. In order to receive the EU Eco-label, a product must satisfy a large number of strict environmental criteria in various areas. Lafayette’s bags are the first paper bags in the world to wear the label.

Paper bag as an advertisement

Environmental criteria were high on the list of priorities for Lafayette when purchasing the paper bags. Fiorini, manufacturer of the bags and long-time UPM customer, was selected as supplier because they could offer eco-labelled paper, among other reasons.

In conjunction with switching suppliers, Lafayette is launching a totally new design on the bag.

The old white bag with a plain logo has now been replaced with a red, more designed paper bag. The idea is that the bag will function as an advertisement out on the street and promote the Lafayette brand.

Strict criteria

UPM bag and sack papers received the EU Eco-label in the autumn of 2007. Several of the company’s other paper factories have received the EU Eco-label.  The reason UPM is pursuing the EU Eco-label is that it currently is the most comprehensive eco-label in the world. Products that receive the label must satisfy strict criteria relating to energy consumption, raw materials, emissions and waste management, among others.
