A Danish company has developed a new packaging for ambient products: AMPET®. a less expensive solution than glass jars and tin cans, that is also suitable for recycling. Competing against 291 entries from 32 countries, AMPET® was recently awarded the World Star2007.

Larsen Danish Seafood already uses the AMPET® solution for the packing and marketing of their long shelf-life fish products.

In 2006, using the AMPET® packaging solution they launched their new product range “Fish for Lunch”. The fish is in single portions and the packaging is easy opened by young and old alike.

“It has a wide rim giving a good welding area, and a convenient point for opening, making it able to be easily handled by both the elderly, and by children whose motor skills are not yet fully developed” explains Karsten W. Schrøder, Marketing Manager at Larsen Danish Seafood A/S.

The product range “Fish for Lunch” won the prestigious “Prix d’Elite” award at the European Seafood Exposition at Brussels in May 2007. The criterion for the prize includes flavour, originality, convenience and packaging.

Convenience and flexibility are important factors in the development of the AMPET® solution. “The packaging has great potential, and lends itself to consumer convenience in keeping with the current trend for prepared food. We have created a particularly flexible solution, which can be made to fit both specific products and the needs of the market” says Jens Bornstein, Managing Director of Faerch Plast.

The AMPET® solution offers a wide range of opportunities within design and functionality when it comes to ambient food products, enhancing the value of the product.

The protection of the environment is a concern shared by all of us. In this area, too, AMPET® is competitive being made from material that can be recycled.

”The World Star Award reinforces our focus on functionality and user friendliness when we develop new packaging. While it is important for the consumer to be dealing as little as possible with the packaging, it must also be functional for the food producer, and still help to differentiate the product from competing products,” says Jens Bornstein.

The World Star Ceremony will take place in Accra, Ghana, in May this year.
