Growth in conveying
Span Tech is a Glasgow-based company with an international footprint. Started in 1976 by James “Bud” Layne, the company’s current CEO, Span Tech has grown from a part time business focused on acoustical ceilings in the commercial construction industry to an innovative leader in the conveyor industry. The mission of Span Tech is to provide customers with the best plastic chain based conveyor systems. And to be the best means providing customers with a product line that offers the widest capability for handling solutions, products that run the longest between service intervals, and products that offer the lowest cost of ownership. This has been accomplished with the Designer System® family of continuous plastic chain curving conveyors. In fact, the Designer System® represents the only sanitary conveyance system that is a single, integrated design by one manufacturer. Span Tech conveyors are utilized in the food, pharmaceutical, beverage and manufacturing industries.
The company headquarters, located at 1115 Cleveland Avenue, is the heartbeat of the organization. Working here are some of the brightest and most competent people in the industry. The research and development team is continuously working to solve customer problems and develop new products for the marketplace. The design engineers work daily at providing detailed conveyor solutions for our customers. The staff of project managers interacts with an international-based network of distributors as well as end users to design and create innovative conveyor system solutions that satisfy and in many cases exceed customer expectations. The Glasgow facility also houses the manufacturing and assembly operations that take the engineered solutions and transform them to a finished conveyor system ready to be installed at the customer’s location.
In addition, Span Tech provides customers with superior customer service. The customer service people provide customers with rapid response to their questions and problems and provide a 24-hour turnaround time on spare parts. In addition, Span Tech products are covered by a one year warranty. To support Span Tech’s commitment to rapid response to customers, the company employs a full time pilot to fly the company plane and take whomever or whatever is needed to customers on an immediate basis.
The Glasgow facility also has a full complement of support personnel including supply chain, finance and accounting, human resources, marketing, quality, safety, and production scheduling. Currently, Span Tech employs over seventy people in Glasgow. However, the company is not limited to Glasgow. It also has employees and a presence in Mexico, Europe, Japan, and China. In addition to an excellent workforce, Span Tech has also invested in technology and software to improve its internal processes. Navigator™, Estimator™, and TorqueMaster™ are software programs developed by Span Tech to streamline the estimating and design processes. Span Tech has also invested in modern CNC equipment over the years to ensure the highest quality products are produced in the most efficient manner. However, when equipment can’t be purchased to meet specific needs, Span Tech employees have designed and built their own to meet those unique needs.
From a small, part time operation to its current status as an industry innovator with an international footprint, Span Tech is poised for domestic as well as international growth.
