Label industry benefitting from strong economy
The label industry benefited from the globally robust economy and positive consumer sentiment in 2007. At the same time, the consequences of the US real estate crisis as well as the weak USD had a negative impact on capital expenditure decisions in North America during the course of the year.Against this backdrop, the Gallus Group increased its turnover to CHF 289 million (previous year: CHF 283 million). Key to this rise were innovations in the form of highly productive label printing machines as well as the expansion of the market position, most notably in western and eastern Europe. The new production facilities for screen printing plates, which were commissioned in 2007, have enabled innovations in screen printing plates and contributes to an expansion of this business.
Development of the folding carton business
BHS Druck- und Veredelungstechnik GmbH, which was fully acquired in 2006, focused on the development of reel-fed printing machines and die cutters for the economical manufacture of folding carton and cardboard products and generated turnover of CHF 40 million (+8%). At Drupa 2008, the company will be presenting a completely new generation of machines for the manufacture of folding cartons with a high-added value via embellishment.
The Gallus Group
The Gallus group is the world market leader in the development, production and sale of narrow-web, reel-fed presses designed for label manufacturers. Its folding carton business is being developed with a range of wide-web, reel-fed presses and die cutters for the cost-effective, in-line production of folding cartons and cardboard products. Its range of machines is complemented by consumables, local service and spare parts throughout the world.
In 1999 Gallus entered into a cooperation agreement with Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, the world market leader for print and media industry solutions. Gallus employs around 690 people, of whom 320 are based in Switzerland. The group headquarters is in St. Gallen.
