Strong growth for aerosols

AEROBAL members have enjoyed a double-digit growth rate in the first half of 2007, even outstripping last year’s already bullish market for aluminium aerosol containers. The 10 percent growth in the first semester and large incoming orders in the last few months herald another buoyant year for the aluminium aerosol can industry so that producers are confident to achieve a world aluminium aerosol can production of about 5.2 billion in 2007. Striking appeal, new products and better sustainability

The reasons for the aluminium aerosol can’s success story are manifold.
Brand owners in the cosmetics industry are increasingly looking for shaped cans with a
compelling design in order to reach utmost shelf impact, recognition value and lasting brand
loyalty. The extremely flexible production technology of impact extrusion enables aluminium
aerosol can manufacturers to offer almost full body shaping of the container. On top of that
sophisticated embossing and debossing technologies and photo-realistic printing techniques
are giving the aluminium containers an unmistakeable face.
The innovative spirit of the aluminium aerosol can industry is also mirrored by the versatility
of aluminium aerosols because meanwhile it spans far beyond the classical deodorant
market. New products such as shower mousses, body lotions, self-tanning “make-up”
products and sun protection lotions are opening up new markets for aluminium aerosol can
producers. Not to mention remarkable ideas such as the “Walk Easy 138-decibel DNA
Personal Alarm” aluminium aerosol can which combines the use of a DNA tracer spray
unique to each product and an UV marker to create a new kind of personal safety alarm. This
can was awarded as the most innovative product at the FEA 2007 International Aerosols
Award. “We have to think out-of-the-box and explore new markets because many other
products can benefit from the advantages which aerosol cans can offer”, says Emmanuel
Perret, President of AEROBAL.
One of the most important recent innovations is the introduction of powder coatings in the
production of aluminium aerosol cans. “Especially with a view to the current discussions
about climate protection and sustainability this innovation represents a valuable contribution
to a more environmentally friendly production”, explains Gregor Spengler, Secretary General
of AEROBAL. For some special applications powder coated aluminium aerosol cans have

already been used. Now it is up to the big cosmetics, food and pharmaceutical companies to
courageously pick up this new technology and carry out the necessary stability tests on filling
goods so that powder coatings can be widely used in future. Besides the environmental
benefits of phasing out volatile organic compound emissions, of energy savings and of
reclaiming and reusing excess coating, this technology provides several advantages for
aluminium can producers and their customers such as less overspray, reduced operating
cost and superior coating performance.
Good prospects for rising demand in growing economic areas
Demand in Europe, North America and parts of South America (for example Argentina) is
quite strong today. And it is not likely that this situation is going to change. On top of that the
aluminium aerosol can industry is counting on rapidly growing markets such as Russia, Asia
and some other South American countries. Especially in Asia brand owners have launched
large promotion campaigns to make deodorants more popular. Today per capita
consumption in these areas are partly far below one can per person per year, whereas per
capita consumption in Europe and the US amounts to about 10 cans per person per year.
These markets are sleeping giants and going to trigger tremendous demand once they catch
up in the consumption of aerosols thanks to rising per capita income. Aluminium aerosols will
disproportionately benefit from a subsequently increasing cosmetics market in these growing
economic areas because the share of cans which is delivered to this market segment is
dominant. About 80 percent of the world aluminium aerosol can production is sold to the
cosmetics industry.
