Finnish communications and ICT company Elisa is changing to new, environmentally sound packaging and mailing solution. Elisa uses board-based DBS cases for packaging its broadband, mobile phone and cable TV products. The disc cases are produced by Stora Enso Media Solutions.

Most of Elisa’s broadband, mobile phone and cable TV products include booklets, SIM cards and optical discs, which contain installation materials, for example. In early 2007, the company conducted a market survey that clearly showed that the end users and partners wanted more environmental friendly solutions for packaging and mailing of the materials. Elisa also sought savings in transport costs by using lower weighing packages. Stora Enso Media Solutions came up with its convenient DBS Discbox Slider case, which is made completely from carton board. Now the company manufactures three different series of DBS cases for Elisa.

Lower impact on climate change

The carton board case is made from wood fibre, a renewable natural resource. This is why using the DBS cases has lower impact on climate change than using plastic cases made from non-renewable raw material from fossil sources. Stora Enso has calculated that the CO2 emissions of the DBS case are only 10 percent of those of a plastic jewel case.
The space-saving design and low weight of the DBS case improve transport efficiency and save mailing costs.

“We use the DBS cases for packaging our optical discs, SIM cards and booklets. Elisa operates in accordance with the environmental management system ISO 14001. The shift to the new, environmentally friendly DBS cases contributes to our goal of taking the environmental aspect into consideration throughout our operations,”
says Anne Korkiakoski, Communications Director at Elisa. “We believe that our customers appreciate environmentally friendly packaging.
When you don’t need the disc case anymore, you can dispose of it in the cardboard collection for recycling.”

“Other advantages of the DBS cases over the plastic cases are the large printable area, the innovative and slim design, non-crackable material and very light weight,” says Matti Koski, Director, Stora Enso Media Solutions.
