Pharmacy event starts today
Paris is the rendezvous on 6 and 7 February for pharma experts from the whole of Europe when the doors open for Pharmapack 2008, one of the most important information and contact forums in the field of drug delivery.

A particularly varied subject range is offered to visitors by the
Gerresheimer Group. With glass and plastic
variants for every type of medication, standardised primary
packaging and highly specialised application systems it
covers an extraordinarily wide spectrum - which has just
been expanded once again. The Spanish company EDP also
appears for the first time under the internationally leading
Gerresheimer label.
Step by step, Gerresheimer has completed its product range for
pharmaceutics and life sciences, while at the same time developing a
global network of production locations. In January the newly
acquired PET specialist gave the Group a strong base in Southern
Europe and South America, and just at the start of February
Gerresheimer furthermore announced the takeover of Allplas in
Brazil – another acquisition which further strengthens the Group
particularly in the segment of pharmaceutical plastic packaging.
Including the two new subsidiaries, the Group as a whole now has
more than forty production plants in Europe, North and South
America as well as China. The strategic objective is to achieve maximum
flexibility and innovation-generating synergies for the market,
says Burkhard Lingenberg, Director of Marketing and Communication
for the Gerresheimer Group.
What has long applied for pharmaceutical glass products is therefore
now continuing in the plastics sector: Gerresheimer operates in an
ever expanding catchment area as a high-calibre specialist and,
evidently, also as an all-in-one supplier in each individual segment.
The exhibition during the Paris event provides a condensed overview.
Glass pharma packaging forms an extremely wide and diversified
requirement area – and Gerresheimer covers it completely. The
product range starts with vials, ampoules and cartridges made of
type-I borosilicate tubular glass, which the Group not only shapes
in a multitude of forms but also, as a vertically integrated manufacturer,
produces itself from start to finish. The most neutral
glass type I is offered by Gerresheimer in addition to types II and
III for moulded glass as well – a unique feature in Europe, which
here rounds off a universal range of pharmaceutical bottles and
jars.
• In the case of injection systems, key focus is on the RTF® brand.
With their convenience for the pharma industry Ready-to-Fill
syringe systems delivered in sterile form are on an unstoppable
growth course: today already they make up the greater part of
Gerresheimer’s syringe sales, and the next production expansion is
already in sight. Resounding success has also been achieved by
multifunctional complementary systems such as the Rigid Needle
Shield (RNS), the Tamper Evident Luerlock Closure (TELC) and the
Backstop: accessories which provide great benefits in terms of
both safety and handling of syringes.
• Technologies for the treatment of respiratory diseases are a key
area of focus in the case of medical plastic systems. For pulmonary
delivery of drugs Gerresheimer exhibits powder and capsule
inhalers, nebulisers and nasal spray systems. Behind these stands a
highly innovative project business, in which Gerresheimer realises
customer-specific systems and system components through all the
phases in the value-added process – from individual development
to tool manufacture, customised production and international
logistics. In parallel with the pharma sector, industrial customers
in the field of diagnostics and medical technology also use the
exclusive full service. The competence spectrum is large. Specialist
areas include for example the field of diabetes.
• Last but not least, an innovative presentation is staged for the
wide spectrum of plastic packaging. Convenience is the keynote
of this varied range – from eyedroppers to tablet containers:
naturally for users but also for the pharma industry. Completely
new standards are set here for example by tamper-evident and
moisture-absorbing closure systems under the Duma® trademark,
which Gerresheimer is the first manufacturer to produce
completely under one roof – including the desiccant capsules. This eliminates external influences and shortens the registration
process. Further innovation is unlikely to be far down the
pipeline, especially since the new subsidiaries offer interesting
indicators for this. The Brazilian market leader Allplas
Embalagens, which operates two production plants and will now
bear the name Gerresheimer Sao Paulo, produces high-calibre
system packaging which ideally complements the portfolio of the
Plastic Packaging Unit. EDP, which will in future operate under
the names Gerresheimer Zaragoza, Gerresheimer Valencia and
Gerresheimer Buenos Aires after its production plants in Spain
and Argentina, substantially expands the PET range and immediately
opens up additional synergy opportunities. West European
sister companies will for example contribute existing system additions
to allow an even greater variety of design for the smart
pharma bottles made of PET (polyethylene terephthalate).
