Bioplastics attracting attention
Bioplastics are attracting much interest at present – rightly so, according to a recent statement on bioplastics issued by IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen e.V. (association of the German manufacturers of plastics packagings and films). Bioplastics broaden the range of raw materials, provide interesting material properties and offer new business fields. The manufacturers of bioplastics packagings are represented in an IK working group “Bioplastics” founded 10 years ago.The IK association considers bioplastics as future-oriented option, additional to plastics based on fossil raw materials. „There exist already interesting application possibilities for bioplastics today”, underlines Jörg Söhngen, Chairman of the IK Working Group Bioplastics. Bio-fruit and bio-vegetables, to give an example, are packed in bioplastics films or trays that are permeable to water vapour. Bioplastics are also used in applications where the degradability of the product is required. An example are biodegradable trash bags for organic waste which are composted together with the content.
The IK association supports all political activities for the development of bioplastics which are not discriminating traditional plastics materials or packaging produced of those.
Only 0.1 percent of the total plastics packaging produced in Germany is made of bioplastics, however double digit growth is expected in this area. In view of the K Trade Fair in Düsseldorf the IK-association prepared an up-to-date statement on this subject.
