New look for PG
The PG tips Polybags were historically printed using the flexographic packaging process which subsequently suffers the normal characteristics of flexographic results whereby “hard shouldering”, minimum dot and fine detail are an issue. The recently introduced brand design for the PG tips range encompasses a background of fading skies and horizons, a design which does not lend itself to the Flexographic process, and presented Unilever with a significant risk that the brand integrity would not be carried across to the Polybags.Unilever briefed Wyndeham Packaging to resolve the challenge. Wyndeham Kestrel, as one of Unilever’s approved project management agencies, bought in sister company Wyndeham Connect to assist and the two companies worked together to recommend a solution. Using their expertise in packaging design and production, Wyndeham Packaging recommended implementing the Samba Screening solution from Esko Graphics to achieve the desired result. The Samba Screening solution records the minimum point size printable on the bag and then, using that point size progressively spaces the positions of the dots to simulate reducing vignettes.
“Wyndeham Kestrel’s expertise in handling all the project management, technical and timing concerns associated with a new launch, provides me with such confidence that I don’t need to get involved,” said Sarah Branagan, Beverages Marketing Manager, Unilever Foodsolutions. “As a result we are extremely pleased with the printed results of the newly designed Polybags.”
“By utilizing the new Samba solution we were able to achieve a significant improvement in the print quality of the new Polybag design,” added Gary Curtis, Technical Director, Wyndeham Kestrel. “The core branding of the PG tips retail packs was successfully replicated and a lift in quality noted across the whole range.”
