Ciba introduce laser marking system

Ciba has launched an innovative laser-marking solution that allows paper and packaging to be printed with a low-power CO2 laser. Applied to the substrate in coatable or ink form by the paper manufacturer or converter, Ciba® PERGAMARK™ is the first non-pigmented solution on the market, enabling transparent coating of substrates. When marked by a laser at point of printing, it yields a more stable, higher-contrast black image than alternative methods such as inkjet or thermal printing, even on curved and other complex surfaces. Variable data such as “best before” dates, serial numbers and addresses can be printed on demand – and at high speed – in the final stage of the packaging process. Environmental and process benefits include all non-toxic additives, no ink or grime at point of printing and no need for solvents in the packaging line. All components of PERGAMARK are in line with food contact regulations.

“PERGAMARK offers packagers and labelers enhanced functionality and flexibility along with environmental advantages,” says Derek Fairclough, Global Head of Ciba’s Paper Business Line. “It can also save costs by reducing downtime and maintenance as well as use of energy and consumables such as ink. Our technical service staff can advise customers on how to optimize the design and customization of their processes to get the most out of this new technology.”

Specifically tuned to frequencies produced by a low-energy CO2 laser, PERGAMARK offers several benefits over laser ablation, including low energy use, no risk of damage to the substrate and black-on-white printing.
