Sprays combatting allergies
Allergic Rhinitis is a common disease affecting an estimated 20% of the world-wide population. The most commonly prescribed topical class of medications is Intra-Nasal Corticosteroids (INS) dispensed with metering spray pumps.Such non-sedative therapies have become very popular over recent years with the success of Flonase® from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Nasacort® from Sanofi Aventis, Nasonex® from Schering- lough and Rhinocort® from AstraZeneca.
Recently, a new once-daily INS - Fluticasone Furoate - has been launched by GSK under the name of Veramyst® in the USA for the treatment of symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 2 years of age and older. It is delivered via a novel device based on a metering spray pump system.
The Market Perspective
INS represent a huge market world-wide estimated at $2.8b in revenues in 2005. This market experienced a significant shift in February 2006 when the first generic versions of Flonase® entered the US market taking on the innovator.
According to analysts, the recent launch of Veramyst® should significantly modify the INS market since this new drug has blockbuster potential.
Metering Spray Pumps
Metering Spray Pumps from Valois Pharma are critical components within Nasal Spray drug products, and INS dosage forms in particular, as the pump is required to meter a very accurate dose (typically 50 to 100µg) of drug product, then release it as a fine mist for passage into the patient’s nasal cavity while at the same time
providing a robust closure to the container.
Valois Pharma not only holds the worldwide leadership position as a provider of Metering Spray Pumps but it also has a strong pipeline of Nasal Spray projects including a novel anti- istamine-based therapy developed by a major pharmaceutical company, currently in the final stages of approval by FDA.
Partnering for more than 60 years with the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies to develop a number of innovative drug delivery devices including Nasal Sprays, Valois Pharma has produced and marketed more than 2.4 billion metering spray pumps over the past decade.
Metering Spray Pumps comprise part of a wide range of innovative drug delivery devices offered by Valois Pharma which also include novel Nasal Metering Spray Pumps such as Equadel™ and Freepod™ as well as dose counting devices and side-actuation systems.
Valois Pharma, a division of Valois S.A.S., specialized in nasal and pulmonary drug delivery technologies with a broad product range that also provides solutions for other drug delivery routes such as buccal/sub-lingual, throat and dermal/transdermal.
