RPC reducing weight

RPC Containers Blackburn is creating a new look for its market-leading Thor range as part of an initiative to reduce packaging weight. At the same time, the company is also launching a brand new size into the range, a 280ml version, specifically developed for fish products such as roll mop herrings and prawn cocktails.

The most notable feature of the new lightweight design is the slimline tamper-evident rim which replaces the much larger gutter of the original design.  This maintains the effectiveness of the tamper-evident feature while reducing material usage and overall pack weight.  The new look also creates a more modern appearance.

In addition, RPC Blackburn is seeking to reduce the amount of material in the container walls wherever possible, while ensuring that the functionality of the packs is not impaired in any way.

“Minimising material usage and ensuring maximum practicality and effectiveness have always been key priorities for our pack designs,” explains RPC Blackburn’s General Sales Manger Sean Dyer.

“Nevertheless, we have recognised that recent consumer – and media – concerns about packaging weight have brought this subject very much centre stage.  Our new Thor design therefore makes a very clear statement about pack optimisation but we have been careful to ensure that the many benefits of the original pack in terms of consumer convenience and product freshness and integrity have been maintained.”

RPC Blackburn is currently testing the new designs on the 315ml and 365ml Thor pots and will gradually introduce the changes across other sizes in the range.  Importantly all the revised designs – as well as the new 280ml size –will be able to run down existing filling lines, with good inter-changeability with the standard weight packs.
