Seizing opportunities as market leader
Since September 1st, 2006 the European sales office of Pactiv Slide-Rite®, the successful reclosable system for plastic packaging bags, has a new address. The Marketing Manager of Slide-Rite® Products Europe Josef Honert (53), who is responsible for the sales of Slide-Rite®-Technology within Europe, seizes the opportunity and provides an interim analysis of perspectives and challenges.
Mr. Honert, are you using Slide-Rite packagings ?
JH: Of course I do. I use transparent Slide-Rite bags at home as well as when I am travelling, e.g. for protecting my clothes. For instance at home I keep snacks and nuts in reclosable bags or use them as lunch bags as they are just handy. I am happy to have slider closure packagings for daily use.
Why ? What are the benefits of Slide-Rite ?
JH: Packagings equipped with our Slide-Rite closure can be handled very easily and comfortably. The consumer can open the packages frequently without any problems and reclose them securely at any time: They help prevent spills. In this way freshness and aroma of food is preserved more efficiently. The producers of packed goods benefit from the high recognition rate of the eye-catching Slide-Rite bags that stimulates the consumers’ frequent demand for the products. Moreover, the optical attractiveness of the system increases the brand image of the product, in other words: “It stands out”.
Why are you selling Slide-Rite ?
JH: I am firmly convinced of the system. It is a well proven and reliable technology with great benefits for the consumers. It can be implemented very easily in nearly any type of packaging machine and bag making machine with the addition of the machine modules developed by Pactiv.
Slide-Rite has been introduced in the US market a long time ago. Do you adopt a different kind of marketing in Europe? Or else: Are American customers different from European customers?

JH: Well, there is one fundamental difference. In the United States of
America Slide Rite has been known for ten years now and is well accepted by the consumers as the ideal solution. In Europe we are still at the stage of persistent market development which shows good promise for a sucessfull launch of Slide-Rite owing to the considerable benefits of the Slide-Rite Technology, the high extent of convenience and the continuously changing consumer behaviour.
The slider technology faces a very special market which develops rapidly.
Demand is especially high in the pet food packaging segment currently. In addition, there is considerable interest for products like meat, sausages, cheese, frozen food and personal care all with development projects in place. Irreplaceable factors of success are certainly the strong partners from the engineering industry, which are able to implement the Slide-Rite technology in their machines and offer the whole range on the market. Equally, the producers of plastic and paper packaging have become an essential part of the marketing system as they introduce adequate Slide-Rite products for the benefit of the consumers. The common objective is to generate added value for branded products and all this to the benefit of consumers.
Which part of your job do you like most?
JH: I enjoy the cooperation with a motivated, competent and sophisticated team which aims at developing new markets for this kind of innovative system. It is a real challenge, requiring a lot of strength as well as pioneering spirit, courage and tenacity. And it is delighting to see how the demand for Slide-Rite products is constantly increasing. This encourages us to develop and supply new markets – not only in Western Europe but also in Central and Eastern Europe.
Why do you move? What will change, what will stay unchanged?
JH: As a result of the positive business development we have decided to move our sales office to a new location. We will guarantee continuity in our customer relationship and services.
What are your objectives for the next few years?
JH: We face a continuous growth. The point is to seize our opportunities as marketleader.
